GoWesty Engine kits?

Just looking at my options for a little more power.  Anybody running the GoWesty engine kits and if so what capacity and how do you find it?  Any feed back would be good.

Cheers,

Michael Roberts

Me too, so I'am not always the last one up a hill

Cheers

Theo and Micheal,to be the first up the hill you need more engine capacity. The GoWesty engine kits are a good way of doing this.Their site has good info on these engines.I did the homework.I found that although these engines have the same capacity, they are down in horsepower and had less fuel economy than the ej25.There was also talk of head gasket issues(again).

It's my understanding the power gains comes primarily from an increase in compression. You might be pinging all the way the hill unless you use high octane fuel.
I've driven a couple of T3's with their 2.4 engines. There is a decided improvement in acceleration compared the stock MV engine. But as BenC points out, the newer engines such as those from a Subie will run away from you. If I valued my T3 more as a future collectible, I would insist on a Wasserboxer. If your goal is to make your Syncro more usable, there is no repowering with a newer motor.

I'm running my syncro on LPG with DJ pistons for high compression, so a bit more compression would not go astray.  However I can see how head gasket issues could be a problem. They do thin down the barrell wall a bit to fit the bigger pistons.  The site itself realy don't say that much about the kit.  Like how under size is the crank or anything about the cam grind.  Would hate to get the crank over here to find it's on it's last life.  It just comes down to cost.  I think for the sort term the Gowesty may be a good option until I realy need more power.  Just seeing what others think?

Its interesting you mention the 2.4, it seems the 2.5 is considered less than reliable. Greg E

Greg,

I didn't mention the 2.5 simply because I have never run into anyone who has ordered it. The local shop I deal with builds larger displacement WBX's as well. They do not like to go beyond 2.3. As you go larger in displacement, so do the displacing of cubic dollars from your wallet.

Very few people can afford to go larger. Those who do can afford other engine options.

As far as reliability, they do not seem any more unreliable than a stock 2.1. Just like the Oettinger Wasserboxers, they still have that 'coolant containment' gaskets. I suspect you would issues there before you had one as a result of the larger displacement.

I can't say much concerning welded Wasserboxer crank failures in the circles I run in.

I have heard good things about the smaller capacity gowesty engines. Do a search on the samba and you'll find all kinds of problems with the 2.5 donk. Considering the subaru motors are so renowned for their reliabilty gowesty would need a pretty flawless design to compare. For an extra 2 grand you could buy all the subaru conversion parts including a low km engine and have subaru reliability pushing your van around. Subaru parts are cheap and easy to come by.  I have a 2.2 in the back of my syncro and although it doesn't pack the punch of  the 2.5 or  the 2.4l gowesty engine it still has far more torque and horsepower than the stock 2.1. Smooth enough to cruise around at 20km/h in 3rd gear without a hiccup and still rev out to 100km/h! Here's a chart comparing the 3 engines to give an idea http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/ANlRTWQi_HxZpdhmm0uK7pLmpc_yNJkMA7ckoLSVgTjR3KC6fDhuchtzUKDPr4sIp27p2TBt5OWYHd56nVGDeK71VqyaV-ucdJFp8A/%20Subaru%20Engine%20Info%2C%20HP%20and%20Torque%20Graphs/Subaru%204%20cyls%20vs%20WBX%20Torque.jpg

Hi Michael
I'm interested in sourcing DJ pistons myself. Did you buy them in Oz?

                                                                   Cheers, Roger [Beetle Bayley].

Hi Roger,
From memory they were a special order in from German.  As we have been running LPG on our T3 2wd since new (well 40K on the clock) we orded in a set and replaced them early on.  There were easiy to get at the time but not sure now.  I think the cost last time we check was well over a grand for a set. I could be wrong.

Cheers,

Michael Roberts

Thanks Michael.

I got hi comp pistons with barrels installed about 4 years ago now and I think my mechanic sourced them from Tooleys - cost about $700.I too am running on LPG and am always looking for more power.Have recently been following another US WBX builder, Chris Corkin, with interest-google "the better waterboxer" for all the details on his work. Good idea, Ben, but I would expect rates of $1000 per hour to follow soon after, rates commensurate with the centre of the universe.

I will second that!

Best mechanical service I have ever seen.

Plus Hart leaves a syncro up on blocks with the spare wheel carrier down for a quiet afternoon nap!

Cant be beaten.
