Great story

Les, give Howard Instruments in Heidelberg a call, they repair all sorts of new & old instruments. Eddie.

Nick,

No.  It is immediately obvious that the odometer is not recording distance travelled and most people would have it rectified immediately.  About the only thing that causes this is pressing the reset while the road wheels are still turning – therefore uncommon.

Does this mean a lot of vans out there have the wrong kms on the clock and buyer beware etc?

Morning Les,

There is a Speedo repair place in St Mary’s on Glossop St, I will get his details for you later today and I might as well ask him can he help you.

Regards

Bob

I have split the nylon gear on the end of the speedo odometer shaft and so far can’t find one on the Internet.  I will try John Goodison on Monday.  In the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi All, done the same thing, resetting while on the move. I send my unit to Ottoinstruments . They installed a new gear, all is fine. They are very trustworthy and overhauled the whole unit.
If remembering correctly the damage was $ 170.--

Hi Les,
I'd expect there are one or more members who have already been through this repair process and can report fix.

Meanwhile, some light reading, these links may be of some interest, though little locally ...

Hartmut,

That is a frightening amount of money to install a gear that costs ten cents to make four minutes to install!!

But the good news is that I have located my Loctite 263 so I will pull the gear out again, soak it in acetone to remove the old coating and start from scratch.

When I have done that, I will look at setting up the NAVMAN-50T in any event.

Les

Bob and all who replied,

Once I found my (mislaid) Loctite 263, I was able to repair the gear again and I have it working again.

A spare gear would be a good idea so I will try to find one from the many referrals.

Thanks

Les

Went to start the Syncro this morning and got the biggest backfire ever.  Hurried around the back, expecting to find that the muffler had relocated itself at least two suburbs away but it hadn’t.

S’funny, thought I, tried another start, which resulted in the engine going from zero revs to about ten thousand in two milliseconds.  Oops!!

(From here on, Greg Esposito is going to laugh himself silly!)

Go back two Day of the Volkswagens; started up at the end of the day to go home and it went quite weird.  Opened up the engine bay, found that the throttle body was no longer connected to the manifold!  The two hefty retaining bolts were well and truly gone.

Having no spare bolts on board, I just stood there saying unrepeatable things.  Greg appeared, took one look, went to his toolbox, came back with two hefty cable ties and it was reattached in seconds.  Thanks Greg!!  Drove the 80k home with great relief.

Now I really and truly meant to find the right bolts and replace those cable ties but . . .  After two years of sterling service, they both broke.

Yeah, I know, slack, slack, slack . . .

I'm glad that your engine is still OK, Les.

Years ago I had a motorcycle engine that took off from a cold start like this and it wrote off it's bearings.

Under different conditions I've had two engines in different car at different times chuck a rod by over revving.

Greg,

This is quite common. When I bought my Syncro, it was advertised as having diff locks – plural.  When I went to look at it, it had a rear lock only.  The person selling it thought that the diff lock subpanel was showing ‘locks’ – plural, even though there was only one knob.  The seller owned a dedicated VW business in Melbourne but his knowledge of Syncros was very limited.
