I have split the nylon gear on the end of the speedo odometer shaft and so far can’t find one on the Internet. I will try John Goodison on Monday. In the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions?

Buy a cheap GPS. They are much more accurate than a speedo anyway. Ben T knows a bloke in the USA that repairs them if you want to contact him I am sure he would pass the details on. He may be able to source the part you need.
Cheers,
Skot

Skot,
Not a silly idea by any means. Could you suggest a suitable unit? It doesn’t need bells and whistles. Global position and distance travelled is really all that I need. If it has a map, so much the better.
Alternatively, if someone has a going speedo that they don’t need, that might also help.

My brother has an old Tom Tom which he hates.
Tried an ALDi version and a BIG W version - they were rubbish.
For me a new Garmin Nuvi would be my suggestion in at least the 4.3" screen.
They are easy to use and reliable but struggle in amongst very tall buildings and in tunnels (obviously).
Go for the specials when they include lifetime map updates as the map updates cost more than the GPS units.
Cheers,
Skot

Skot, I am a bit embarrassed to reveal that I have a NAVMAN 59T, given to me a couple of years ago by a very scatty woman who absolutely could not learn even the basic setup and declared it to be ‘useless’.
I downloaded the full manual from the Internet at the time and just haven’t even thought about it since. I will read it now; it is probable that it would be quite adequate.

Peter,
The first person I will ask will be John Goodison at Volks Home. John has an encyclopedic memory (and he has been in VW’s all his life). He keeps parts that many people never knew existed and, in particular, he sources OEM parts from everywhere. And, even with OEM parts, he will not stock it unless he is sure that it matches the original quality.
Because the gear that I need is being driven by a worm gear, there is unlikely to be anything that ‘might’ do. It has to match the angle of the worm gear teeth. This has split before and I fixed it with cyanoacrylate but then I had brain fade. I recently pressed the odometer reset before the Syncro had fully come to a stop – guaranteed to split the gear!!
I will keep everyone informed.

Hi Les, John may be able to help with a second hand speedo, but I doubt he will have a new gear. These guys might. Not far from John. Or possibly Ringwood speedos who are the biggest auto instrument repair place in
Melbourne. That said a drop of super glue will fix it again(as long as it isn't split right through) if you don't press the odo whilst moving again. Peter,
No, it isn’t a myth; it is just a mechanical consequence. Pressing the reset stops the odometer shaft from turning but the speedo drive cable is still driving, with the inevitable result that the weakest link (the nylon spur gear) has to give.
I repaired it with Loctite cyanoacrylate last time and now can’t find it; I will have to buy a new tube.

Hey Les my odometer failed after I tried to reset the trip on the move.
Mentioned it to a visiting syncro owner who commented that you should only reset it when stoped. Not sure if that is gospel but it did fail as I reset ?
Said it happened to him and it was the whole tumbler that jumps out if reset while traveling at speed?
