Hard to select gears. Sticking clutch.

Guys.

My Syncro has always had this issue in a mild way. But now it's bad.

When hot it's worse.

Can't get it in any gear at all. But shut it off. Put it in g or 1st. And it's fine shifting if you time it right.

It's like the clutch plate is sticking.

It failed on me 2 weeks ago heading to orange NSW with the trailer on. I managed to drive it there and back to melb nursing it.

I'm not ready to swap the engine out yet as $$$ won't allow it. So I'm hoping it's an adjustment.

Someone said a blocked bell housing breather??  Does it have one??

Steve.

I heard of similar symptoms where the release bearing had failed.

Once gearbox out the bearing was in bits in the bell-housing but just enough left to grab everything.

Steve,
Sticking clutch I s a bit hard to understand a bit more info like what's the peddle fell like. Not disengaging?

You don't have to drop the motor you can drop the gearbox I just did it on a 2wd so you have a few more bits to undo ,tail shaft difloc pipes etc. Its no big deal coming out but back in to do yet ?

Think it the same throw-out the old beetle used so maybe a bit under engineered for modern day usage <higher klm travelled now days means more gear changes ?

My peddle went rock hard think the slave was at the end of its stroke? but was pumped out its full length.<Actuating arm Horizontal>

Throw out was in 3 pieces and the hard plastic master hose had burst due to previous owner pushing hard peddle I think?

I bought the car sight unseen for the pop top and parts for my SA microbus Syncro.

Its too good to wreck as it been gone though buy an old fellow that spent a fortune on brakes, exhaust, cvs etc etc
Its a one owner trakka with original paint no rust just this clutch issue, and a big dent in the sliding door

The guy has gone into care so it was a very much loved old t3 and its going to live again !

Clutch plate is as new so maybe a new clutch plate with the old throw out is a bad idea.

I dropped the box and the throw out had twisted out of its retaining cips on one side and ball bearings all over the place.

Have the throw out on order from the VW shop and see how I go slipping it up and back using a motorcycle lift that works like it was designed for the job coming out as it lifts up and forward in the same motion, hopefully it will go back just as easily.
Cheap repair just a bit of therapy under a T3 and so far all good

Thanks again for the pipe Jens

Steve check the nut that holds the selector shaft and the linkage together as it enters the gearbox ? Mine came loose after I lent it to a friend and I think he did a few rough changes loosening the nut ?
If its that too easy ?

It's the clutch plate.
It's shuddering like a wet dog in the artic.
It's all good. An excuse to start my engine swap in the next few months.
