Hi Anyone
have 92 syncro
really hard to shift into first and or reverse
checked the clutch resavoir its full
any ideas

Robert,
 
The usual culprit is the shift linkage.  Any competent VW mechanic who has experience with the 2WD T3 should be able to set it correctly for you.  The shift mechanism in the Syncro and the 2WD is the same.  If it is a clutch problem, you will experience difficulty will all gears, not just first/reverse.

If it is stiff, try cleaning and lubricating the gear lever mechanism where it passes through the body. 2 or 3 places underneath, very prone to getting dirty.

Perhaps you could check the nut that holds the link to
gearbox selector shaft. Follow linkage to gearbox, nut is on shaft
just as it enters box.

problem,he may be back from Austria but not sure ?

Check if clutch engages early (close to floor), if clutch has done
high kms it will engage just as you let foot up, therefore any
carpet, floormats, etc may be preventing complete disengagement.

Dear Robert,
You have already received much good advice on what might be the problem.IF however none of it works, I did have a similar problem in the past on a T2 Kombi where I could either get 1st OR reverse easily but not both or I had trouble with both. It turned out the bearing plate on the floor at the bottom of the gear lever was too badly worn to get properly into adjustment.I bought one from a wrecker for next to nothing, fiddled with the adjustment by trial and error and got it working perfectly again dismissing my forebodings of a complete gearbox rebuild.
According to my Bentley manual p34.12 a post 06/1988 T3 does not have alignment holes but has mounting studs that seem to allow adjustment.
Someone correct me if I am completely on the wrong tram here, as I don't want to try it out on mine whilst its working fine, but this might be a cheap solution IF all else has failed before you get into some serious spending.

im just learning but have spent all my money plus
ihave seen what you are talking about when i removed the boot for the gear shift lever
then climbed under van let down spare tyre compartment etc and sw how the shifting works i cleaned the dorlon?? plastic ball and re greased seems to work better now
will have to look at the alignment slots again theres not much play on mine
92 syncro does what im saying make any sense?? hope so thank you for helping me

Any good technical bookshop will either have it or be able to get it.  They are !@#$%^&* expensive but they are also cheap insurance.  I don't know what the current price will be but at least the Australian dollar is better than when most of us bought ours!!  Have a look on the Internet.  All  good VW workshops will have one.  The advantage of having your own is that you can read up on things like the shift linkage, do it yourself and know what you are doing.  In the interim, I can scan pages and send them to you.  I will get the relevant shift linkage instructions done tonight.
