Having Clutch and Gear shifting issues

Hi,
Having some issues.
Slowly getting worse especially after a long run on the hwy.
One time on a longer trip I pulled over to do a U-turn and could not find any gears.
Let things cool down then I could find first and my other gears too!
Luckily it didn't spoil my plans for that weekend.

Once I got home from the trip I took car to mechanic.
He said definitely the clutch.  So I expected him to put in a new one.
He said that he found some free play in the pedal and adjusted it.
This was no mean feat as he described it! Not much room in there I had to sue a mirror to see what I was doing.
I don't think you are supposed to do this.  Its a hydrolic clutch.  Anyway only charged me $50.  So no biggie.
Anyway so great i think its fixed "for a while" but my fears are confirmed the next day while
doing a short local 5 min trip I lose first gear again.  Lucky I can find 2nd and take off.
Now it sits in the drive and Im too scared to drive it.

I was looking at the benplace pages on clutch jobs.  Should I get the Ultimate one?
For me price is a factor but safety and reliability is paramount.

I'm not sure If I should take it back to my mechanic who is not a VW mechanic
and specify what I want done.  Alternatively does anyone know a VW mechanic on Southern GC worth their salt?

Sorry for the long post 3 questions summarised
1.  VW mechanic or no for my clutch job if so where on southern GC?
2.  Is it the Bushings in the Shifter area that have worn making it hard to find first gear at times a contributing factor? Sometimes I was having difficulty finding first gear before the clutch problem
3. Should I do the Ultimate Job as a matter of course and how much should this cost ballpark figure?

Thanks in advance,

Rowan

Check the nut holding the pressed metal bracket where linkage enters gearbox ? Does it feel like gearshift works with engine off ?

It is unlikely to be your clutch Rowan. As Peter said you need to diagnose it by getting in the situation where you cant get it in gear then shut down the engine and try again. If it goes in the issue is that the clutch is not being disengaged properly. This would most likely be a problem north of the slave cylinder. How old is your slave and master cylinders? How long since you flushed the fluid? Generally when clutches fail you will get slipping. A good way to diagnose a weak clutch is to get the vehicle labouring in fourth gear and whilst still holding the accelerator down pop the clutch momentarily. If it goes back to labouring after your foot comes off the clutch all is well. If the engine revs and the clutch cant grip you need to pull the g/box. Have you checked if the slave is leaking? Gregor

P.s. this is going to sound silly but make sure you haven't got thick floor mats under the clutch pedal.

I found that the shifter guide was worn out and I could not get into gear when the engine was hot. The T3Technique.com shifter guide repair kit for US$45 fixed the problem completely

Hi All,

Just went for a drive.  Same issue cant find a gear when things warm up. Pull over turn off engine can find gears. Sitting in first with clutch in car running car is creeping  forward. Having to apply break at the lights to stop var moving forwards.

Thanks for the imput.  I will a shifter guide as Doone has suggested.  This will eliminate one issue.

Thanks Rowan

Hi Rowan,

Had the same problem when working on clutch.
Put everything together and forgot to bolt the bracket on that holds the clutch lever as it enters the gearbox.
Check it has not worked loose

Cheers
Philippe

Hi Rowan,

A while ago on here some one was chasing a leak in the lines between the master and slave. I think that involved a leak in the plastic line from the master.

Just another place to look for leaks.
