Out of all of the cars that I have owned. only 4 have had power steering. The only car that bothered me was an HT V8 wagon with manual steering and drum brakes. Now that was heavy on the steering and brakes!

Power steering is for wimps!

Martin,
Given the weight distribution, steering geometry and all wheel drive, the lack of power steering is much less of a problem with the Syncro than it is with a front engined van.

When I test drive it I will see how tough it is without the power steering and how much of an issue it is for me.

As for air con...I have been living without it driving my mk2 Golf for some time.

My Trakka doesn't have power steering. I find the steering is fine once van is in motion, but needs some muscle to turn steering when at a very slow speed or negotiating into parking spaces/in and out of the garage etc. As well, the heavier the van and/or the wider the tyres and/or if they're under-inflated, the harder it gets to steer in those circumstances.

I believe where power steering is invaluable is off-road on those occasions when the front wheels want to follow a diagonal rut ... the steering wheel gets wrenched out of your hands without warning so can pose a dangerous consequence. Whereas I believe power steering in this circumstance assists the driver retain better steering control. But if the van isn't used off-road ... then this issue would not arise so not a problem.

Sure, just drop me a line whenever you are ready.

As for the bar, these things were traded at around EUR 150 to EUR 170 last year (used of course). Often a new cable set was recommended. I bought a suitable set from http://www.kupplung.de/Elektrosaetze.html, but there may also be other sources out there.

As for best ways to import, I would have to do my homework first. Please let me know when you definitely think you are going to go down this route and I will happily try to be of help then as regards export to Australia. For customs/tax etc., please check with your local authorities.

Yes but my SA import GL aircon died long ago...

Hi Everyone,
Yes, I have been quiet for a while,
The one on carsales below is listed  by Michael Eichert. It was his father's who has passed on.

First posted by Les on 29 Jan, post 20178; then 3 Feb, from post 20266 on & with pics.

Looks like a good basic unit & the fitout is quite well done. It's got cruise control. Not bad value now at $20,500.

I rang Michael in early Feb to discuss. His father bought the van new, had Trakka do the top, then did the internal fitout himself.
The 85k kms is genuine and the van is in almost mint condition as it has always been kept under cover and serviced religiously.
I was very interested for a while contemplating changing the internal fitout ala Trakka and fitting P/S, rear difflock, sliding windows etc. basically bringing up to Trakka syncro specs. A big project. Probably would have cost $10-15k (at least?).

In the end I opted for the '89 Trakka "synchro" advertised on Gumtree, first appearing in early January. Picked it up last Monday & drove it home to Adelaide Tuesday. It's almost certainly a 'Gold Pak' sold from new, with all the extras and Stratos orthopaedic seats (lovely!).
Had a full pre-purchase inspection done by J&F Motors in Richmond http://www.jfmotors.com.au/index.htm
Came up pretty well with no major problems. It's had almost $6k spent on it in the last couple of years, brakes, new steering rack, etc.. Needs a tune. It's done 250k+ kms.
Paid similar money to the one above. The advantage with this one is that it's all there. Just a little TLC & restoration needed in the short term. Will fit a decoupler as the VC gets fairly tight after running for a while. Further down the track looking at 16" wheels & tyres, EJ25 with Smallcar kit (or even the EE20 diesel!), transmission/ diff rebuild with custom ratios etc, etc. Will post some pics later.

Bruce.
