Hello everybody | advice and opinions for van purchase

Hi everybody,

My name is Tim. I just became a member and am slowly reading through the forum. (Just let me know of you've answered these questions before.) Great info!

I am a german fellow and have been in Melbourne for about 7 years, and I'm looking to buy a van - hopefully a T3 Syncro.
I owned a '74 T2 pop-top in '94 and '95.

Now we are a family with two little boys looking to get a second car to have fun times, a towing train, quick weekend escapes and some city hopping.

1. Towing
I read in a German T3 manual that the T3 has a maximum 2000 kg braked towing capacity with a 80kg tow ball down weight but the original Volkswagen manual mentioned an exemption for a 100kg allowance for the (german) TÜV (safety inspection authority) so I guess the van is up to it. Can anybody tell me what it's like to tow a trailer with a Syncro? I guess this might be different from engine to engine - how about a 2.1 waterboxer as a staring point? The trailer we would like to eventually tow is a Jayco Swift pop top, about 800 kg empty but more likely about 1000 - 1100 kg loaded with a 65 -105 kg tow ball. Plus four people and a bit of gear in the van. Slow would be totally fine with me but safe it should be.
Any estimates about comfortable travel speed and fuel intake? How about hills and overheating? I's love the 4WD to get up and down the gravel / dirt tracks around Lake Tyers in Victoria with the trailer … reasonable?

2. Reliability (with the above in mind)
I am not a mechanic, but am happy to work on any issues and do the regular maintenance on the van, but would also pay someone more clever than me to fix things. My family lives in Germany and I go there occasionally too so if need be I could get spare parts from the motherland. What should I expect to pay per annum to keep a a 25 year old T3 happy? Can I have family holidays without having to fix anything during holidays?

3. Model
I think I would be happy to drive a low spec model (window van though) so that the van is light and has enough room for the kids bikes, pram and the usual gear to lug around town. But I would like to have only a 3 seater bench in the back (maybe the second row from a Caravelle, Multivan, Caravelle Carat) for our two pygmies. Will I need to be aware of what model to get regarding putting 3 point harnesses and anchor straps into to van? (with the bench if it's not present)

4. I am going to look at this van - does anybody know it?

Many thanks for your advice and opinions!

Cheers,
Tim

The common towbar sold in Australia by Volkswagen was made by Hayman Reese. Be aware that these were only designed for 1000kg. It would be better if you could get a German factory bar. It should be able to tow your Jayco Swift OK. If everything is working and you have the correct radiator, it should not overheat.

These are old vehicles. How long is piece of string?

It is easy to put a seat and belts in the back unless it is an ex Telstra which is a Panel Van.

Good luck Tim.

Phill,

I haven’t ever looked at the floor of the Telecom vans but I wonder if they might have had the seat anchor points in the floor.  All of the T2 vans, including the non-window vans, sold in Australia did.  Can anyone with a telecom van confirm this?

Les

No anchor points in any van that started life as a panel van. Not even my 92 2wd trakka multivan. Eddie.

Tim,

We have a German member, Joachim Dietlicher, who toured Australia some years ago.  We met up with him and made him an honorary Australian Syncronaut.  He gets a digest of the group messages and should pick up on this one.  If he doesn’t, you can get him on enquiries@arjuna-translations.eu.

He converted a German police Syncro to a camper, shipped it here and toured all of Australia.

Les

Les, Tim and Group,

@ Les: Thank you for bringing this up. Yes, very quiet member of the group unfortunately, as the syncro has been deregistered since around 2004 (when we finished touring OZ) and been undergoing a complete restoration since 2011, plus new girlfriend and kid, plus an active member of our professional translators' association over here.

@ Tim: Not sure how I could be of help, but if I can, please let me know. Should you be playing with the thought to have a German towbar imported to Australia, I might be able to organise one from a German TÜV examiner who also is a syncro enthusiast. Another source might be the German syncro group, particularly this forum: http://www.ig-syncro16.de/forum/index.php?name=ForumsPro&file=viewforum&f=9, where towbars appear from time to time. Again, if help is needed, please let me know.

Before thinking about importing a bar to OZ, I would definitely check with your local authorities if they would give their OK to the bar. As an example, my camper mentioned by Les had four seats approved by the German TÜV, which WA authorities didn't want to accept in the beginning upon registration in OZ. Circumstances might be different in other states though and I was a `temporary resident' of Australia back in 2004, not a `permanent' one. Don't know if this would also make a difference.

@ Group: Thanks for sharing recent travel experiences/pictures, especially your trip to Tasmania. Reminded me of the fab time I had when I was there. Kelly Basin for example. Very remote and peaceful spot. You guys look very self-balanced and happy. Good on you!

Cheers,

Hi Joachin,

You are correct that a genuine VW (Westfalia) towbar is not legal in Australia. I would still use one as there is nothing available here.

Feel free to come back to Picnic point for a visit at any time.

Thank you, I definitely will at some point. It would be very nice to meet you again, and the new girlfriend want's to visit Australia, too ;)

Thank you for your responses.

Good to know about the potential legal issues fitting a german tow bar.
@Joachim Thank you - you already helped! Re a german tow bar: That would be great. (Let me get the van first) Do you have any idea what I would be looking to pay for a german tow bar, best way to import and import costs?

I looked at this T3 (no Sycro though) yesterday at thought the body looked quite good and the milage could be believable as the owner presented some service records. Besides it not being a Syncro it also was a panel van. I was a bit surprised though that it was air-cooled. Would this be a 1970cm³ with 51kw? I thought since the mid 80's VW put the wbx in the vans? Do australian Syncros also come with air-cooled engines or is the minimum engine in a Syncro the 2.1 Digifant with 64kw? I guess towing 1000kg and loading the van would be a bit much for a lbx in summer and dirt roads?

Also the Syncro I am looking at tomorrow has these 15inch rims and tires mounted. Les already noted that I should make sure that they are up for the weight. They could be Mercedes rims like those. Or 1998 VW Passat wheels? What should I ask the seller and take note from the rims to verify suitability? Anybody has experience with (these) Hankook tires?

Many thanks!

Tim

Tim,

The 2WD T3 was sold in Australia initially with the air cooled engine. The Syncro had the 2.1 litre MV engine.

No that is not an air cooled engine. Air cooled have round headlights and no lower grille. Only made before '83.

75,000kms sounds like BS. Other than that the van looks OK.

We have a new member who is interested in this Syncro.  Does anyone know anything about it?

If it is a genuine one owner, it could be quite good.

Les

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/VOLKSWAGEN-TRANSPORTER-14424795

It was advertised on here at $23k before it appeared on carsales at $23k then reduced to $20.5k a couple of weeks ago.

It's a basic spec model with no air con, no power steering, no diff locks, no opening rear windows. Has a Trakka roof but homemade interior.

Paul.

Paul,

That’s interesting.  The only Syncros without power steering that I have seen were very early basic spec blind vans; this is supposed to be a 92.  Can anyone add to that?

Normal window vans do not have power steering, cloth seats or diff locks. Only the deluxes have these. The deluxes sold for $7,000 more than the basic.

Thanks for the replies.

I am the new member interested in this one.

When I test drive it I will see how tough it is without the power steering and how much of an issue it is for me.

As for air con...I have been living without it driving my mk2 Golf for some time.

Martin,

Given the weight distribution, steering geometry and all wheel drive, the lack of power steering is much less of a problem with the Syncro than it is with a front engined van.

Out of all of the cars that I have owned. only 4 have had power steering. The only car that bothered me was an HT V8 wagon with manual steering and drum brakes. Now that was heavy on the steering and brakes!

Power steering is for wimps!

When I test drive it I will see how tough it is without the power steering and how much of an issue it is for me.

As for air con...I have been living without it driving my mk2 Golf for some time.

Out of all of the cars that I have owned. only 4 have had power steering. The only car that bothered me was an HT V8 wagon with manual steering and drum brakes. Now that was heavy on the steering and brakes!

Power steering is for wimps!

Martin,
Given the weight distribution, steering geometry and all wheel drive, the lack of power steering is much less of a problem with the Syncro than it is with a front engined van.
