Hello from Malaysia!

Hey Guys,

My membership has just been approved and I hope to learn more about our wonderful machines from this forum. I'm told I've to do an intro so here goes...

Name is TengTsen which sounds like 10cents so everyone calls me that =) I'm married with a 4yr old son and a 2 year old daughter. We leave in Kuala Lumpur. Should any of you visit Malaysia, I'll be glad to be your host and show you around.

I bought a 10seater 89 Caravelle C Syncro in Nov '11. Unfortunately no diff locks. I've added a decoupler to prevent cooking my VC as I usually do highway runs and Malaysia is very Hot! This is my 1st water-cooled VW and like all of you here, I absolutely love it!!!

I've been driving Air-cooled VWs for 20yrs and currently have 7. Here's the list according to year of manufacture-'61 Samba bus, '62 Bug(stock), '65 Bug(cal look), '66 Bug (stock), '66 Kombi(Australian) '68 Bug(Baja), '73 Bay Kombi.

You can see pictures in my Facebook, search TengTsen Khoo and add me.

Regards,
Khoo10cents
Hi there TengTsen,

Welcome to the world of syncro - its a beautiful place!

If you can to save us from that horrible facebook thing - put some photos up in the photos section.

Ask any questions you have as there are many very knowledgeable folks on here that are happy to help.

You seemed to have the idea with the de-coupler already - although most only de-couple for doing U-Turns or 3-point turns and leave the VC in operation even on highways for better grip and handling.

Anyway, enjoy your new toy!

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Scott,

Thank you for the warm welcome. Good to meet more and more Syncro owners from around the world. In March 2012, I was fortunate to meet a couple; Martin and Sarah from Germany who were traveling around Asia in their highly modified Syncro (http://www.tigerbus.de/). I've posted some pictures of both Syncro mild off-roading while they visited Malaysia. Martin also helped me bring some Syncro parts as there is none available for 4WD, only parts for 2WD here as there's only 5 Syncro in Malaysia!

I de-couple during highway driving but I do turn it on when it starts to rain. Not sure if the VC is temperature sensitive as we can get up to 35 °C weather here.

Regards,
Khoo

Khoo,

Only 5 syncros? Gee I thought we had bugger all down here!

We do get hot  weather here too ... but not for a couple of years now.

We used to get regular days in the Sydney area of around 40 degrees C.... but last summer Perth had 40 degrees almost all summer long! The east coast of Australia is going through a global cooling period so very good for old VW's.

Heat is an issue here and a few have fitted additional oil coolers to prolong the life of their drive-trains.

Great to hear you still manage to find international travellers with only 5 syncro Owners in the country.

Cheers,

Skot

Hello Khoo. That syncro is a fine looking machine. Very unique a vehicle that can carry 9 in comfort across rough terrain and then park in a shopping centre car park. The splitties are also unique and beautiful. Wish i had them in my garage. Bill
Hey Bill,

Good to meet you here. Been looking around at Australian syncros and especially like the Trakka pop top conversion and how it just closest flush like a tin-top. I would really love a Syncro camper but none here available and it'll be sad to rip of my seats to convert to a camper as they're all in very good condition.

One of my splits is actually Australian with the airvents above the beltline. It was brought into Malaysia in 1971 by someone from RAAF as they used to have an airforce base up north in Butterworth, Penang in the '60s & '70s.

Hello Khoo,

I am a bit intrigued with your blue Syncro - the steering wheel is on the "wrong" side.
In Australia like Malaysia we drive on the left side.

Hi Theo,

Yes, my bus is a Lefty. Mine was brought in by the Embassy of Zimbabwe. No idea why they brought in a LHD as Zimbabwe is RHD too! Perhaps the ambassador was stationed in Europe before Malaysia...or someone made an error researching Malaysia and thought we were LHD and still lived in jungles and needed a Syncro! Anyway, there's no other Syncros available for me to choose from so just bought the 1st one that came up. I figured off-road is always single track so doesn't really matter + there's more 2nd parts for LHD!...It's the best of the 5 syncros here and don't think it ever went off-road before. That's all gonna change now as I'm gonna use it for what its made for and explore the deep Malaysian jungles =)

Khoo,

From memory, there is a full-on off-road rally through the Malaysian jungles which is a World renowned event and probably the most difficult terrain in the world - they even have to build their own bridges!

So you have plenty of places to test out your rig.

Take lots of photos when you do and the odd video and post them here - we love them!.

Cheers,

Skot

Skot, That'll be the 'Rain-forest' challenge. That's a bit too hardcore for our rare 20+yr old Syncros + for me too...
