Help! Gremlins attack on my trips to coffs

Hey Guys,

I won't bore you with all my dramas but you will get the jist of it
from my questions:

1. Where can I get the square highbeams (the whole unit)? Apparently
the VW scirro (spelin?) has the same? Can you still get them for a
reasonable price from VW or Hella or aftermarket?

2. Cruising along at 100kmh for an hour or so, then put in the clutch
and idle the engine and the oil light / buzzer comes on. Also driving
up Dorrigo mountain when left in 3rd or 4th on a steep bit the oil
light comes on, change down and it stops. Any ideas? Have just
installed rev guage and dash from america, don't know if that's
something to do with this. Has plenty of fresh oil and oil filter.

3. The alternator light returned halfway up the highway. This is
frustrating as you know I have been through the whole commodore
alternator saga and I thought this was fixed when I scored and
installed a rather new reconditioned (with uprated windings) commodore
alternator I scored off a buddy. Before taking this alternator back
to the auto electrician who worked it, any ideas why I'm going through
so many alternators??! I haven't even installed a gigantic stereo
yet... :(

But apart from that, my coffs trip has been great and the syncro is
going strong. Hope all who attended had fun at the vw nationals and I
may be seeing some of you at Narooma it seems, will confirm closer to
the date.

Have fun, thanks as always for all the help,
Sam

Only the inner high beams are from a Scirocco, which were not sold in
Australia anyway. Have you thought about the South African dual
headlight grille?

What is your VIN/chassis number?

First, disconnect the tacho as it may be upseting the dynamic oil
pressure warning. Did you use a genuine VW oil filter? Don't listen to
anyone about cheap oil filters, VW is the only way to go. Cheap
insurance.

Why Commodore?

Look forward to meeting you.

PS Where do you live?
Gday Sam,
You should have gone to the Nationals last weekend.
I noticed for sale the T3 upper front grill complete with square
lights as well as the lower grill. That was late on Sunday afternoon
so I guess they didn't sell.
Cheers
Ken

Finally got home at 11pm last night. Last 60km's was on the back of a
tow truck when my reconditioned commodore alternator which replaced
the original dying commodore alternator that came with the van died as
well :( The jump starter I carried only got me so far...

Will start investigation and work soon as time permits but I have to
list the total frustrating gremlins encountered in my trip from Castle
Hill to Coffs and back:

1. Second Alternator died.
2. Oil light coming on mysteriously. Will try a vw oil filter but
still uncertain.
3. One highbeam smashed.
4. Lost one hella foglight cover.
5. Discovered rust hole in bottom of drivers door under the seal.
Recommend others also have a look there. Have rust converted and fish
oiled.
6. Broke a clip that holds on my new flyscreens.
7. Please no more gremlins!

So a trip that was only supposed to cost only around 200 in fuel is
ending up costing me several.

Will be visiting autoelectrician soon. Anyone can track down the
lights that were at the Nationals or any other square highbeam let us
know. Will start searching myself soon.

Will also check out VIN / Chassis and check that the fuel injector
recall was done.

Oh well... was still a good trip and was cool to sleep overlooking the
ocean and watch the sunrise.

Have a good one guys. Thanks all :) Hopefully see you at Narooma.
Sam

I also some years ago had oil pressure problems and found when it was warm the oil had
actually collapsed (no long chain molecules) and becomes very thin. Suggest going to sae
30-50.

driving..this is a common fault with the t3 2.1 after a number of
years..the high pressure switch is faulty, its located under the
water pump and is a bastard to change ..be sure you have the correct
part number switch ..will try and post this number ..well worth
keeping in your spares box

Thanks to all who replied. Have done further reading myself and I
will be ordering some genuine oil filters and the oil pressure
switch - high pressure one or low pressure one? any parts numbers
appreciated :)

Also waiting to arrive from the US is a syncro alternator as opposed
to sticking another commodore one in, will see how long this one
lasts. And a replacement square highbeam.

Hope all are not having too many gremlins

Sam :)
