Help. Jump seat?

Well it appears the good lady wife has a bun in the oven. That is going to make number three. My syncro is a full camper with legal seating for two in the back. So I see two options for the future. One is to remove the wardrobe and skinny cupboard and reinstate a three person rear bench with genuine seat belts. The other is to acquire a genuine jump seat and belts for the left front.
So two questions for y'all. Which way do I go? & Does anyone in Aus have a jump seat for sale (long shot I know)?
Greg E
I have never seen one in Australia.

Greg,

Congratulations on the impending arrival.

I thought about the jump seat thing too - just to get six in mine instead of 5 (I have a full length rock-n-roll seat in the back).

I saw a really nice T3 jump or buddy seat advertised on theSamba.com a little while back which had everything but they wanted around US$400 plus the cost to ship it. Just got too expensive.

Also apparently you need the brackets originally built into the van (so the add said) which also made me think twice. However, I am sure this could be easily fabricated.

I have also seen a T3 syncro in a UK magazine which had a buddy seat from a T4 in it.

However, I have yet to see a RHD VW fitted multivan in Oz (which had the buddy seats) and apparently they were never made for T3's (only lots of LHD ones). There are not many T4 multivans around either - lots of Caravelles with bench seats (2 rows) but no buddy seats.

Let us know if you find anything.

Best of luck with the bub.

Cheers,

Skot

Cheers Phill, Scott.
Yeah Scott it is a bit of a pipe dream to find one here. I have seen them sell it the states for 200-250usd with all the brackets and belts. Freight would be a killer not to mention getting someone to send it. I guess I need to find a full set of rear caravelle belts then, anyone breaking one? And I will just refit the rock n roll hinges further out. Might be a good time to sort an extra evaporator under the bench and some sound insulation. I guess a full width bed will be nice. Greg E

Congratulations Greg and Mrs Greg - good to see you don't spend all your time under your Syncro. We used to cart our 4 boys around in a T2 Camper and initially obtained a short VW upholstered presumably genuine VW seat which gave 3 across the front and allowed fitting of the rudimentary child seats available in those days. It had a frame on the seat which allowed it to be bolted on to the passenger seat fittings. Its an alternative that may still be available  although safety standards have become much more demanding since then. It may provide the start for something that could be further modified for compliance. For a T3 my brochures talk of "there are 3 seats in the standard pick-up cab: the driver's seat and a 2 passenger bench seat" As others have said they may be as scarce as hen's teeth but are a possibility. Could even another brand of seat or an aftermarket one be legally fitted?
Personally I would try to keep the benefit of the walk through and aim for introducing another seat in the back. While the children are young and small 3 on the back seat should be physically possible with the middle seat belt using the outer belts fixing points on the floor/fire wall and the lap/sash part going over the seat back to the fixing points ahead of the engine cover - but would it comply? We had so many disposable nappies packed round the van when we went away sometimes that our kids had more protection round them than if they had curtain airbags. Its a hard one to sell to the compliance engineers however but it might be worth a wander into the Carlton Vic Roads in Lygon St. and see how helpful they might be on how you solve this issue.
With our T2 we had a rearward facing seat behind the driver which had the additional benefit of allowing both sides of the dining table to be better utilised. When you think how will you fit 5 round a campervan table let me reassure that it has been done with 6 although its generally reckoned the father lost his mind in the process.
All your previous Syncro trials have primed you to overcome this major challenge. In years to come  when on Fathers Day you sit contentedly in your rocking chair with your family grown up around you, you will look at your wife and say wasn't that a time!
Good luck
Roger

Try this one from Colorado - only $145 US plus postage costs - looks perfect and undamaged plus meant for drivers side US vehicles which means perfect for our passenger side and comes with the seat belt & brackets.

Thanks Scott, That is a nice one, will have to get some captains chairs to match! I have emailed him. He seems to be a small time resto guy. Hope he says yes. I tried a couple of other samba ads and they did not respond. Cheers for looking. Greg E

As it will be primarily for my wife and I and probably be borrowed by our kids who seem content to stick with 2 children (heard that before) have settled on the standard 2 front 2 rear seats. Trakka did offer the option of putting in the additional multivan type seat runners ( which ARE on the bench seat) to allow an additional seat  but it seemed to introduce too many compromises for me including cost for something that may not be needed. (perhaps on my future T 99?) It did cause me to seriously consider a Multivan and have a more temporary camper arrangement but that had no appeal for my wife. I think the best solution is to also buy Mark's very attractive T3 Caravelle but my wife reckons she would raher have another baby at 70 than me collecting more Syncros/4motions to park in the street. It is also possible to hire (at a price) a Multivan for outings of the entire Bell clan.
When I finally  get the T5 (late Oct?) perhaps it would be an opportune time to have a meeting/coffee at the Edinborough Gardens again to catch up generally on what people are doing with their syncros and allow those who want to to examine and or drive the T5. I won't bring my wife in case your wife's happy condition is contagious.
Good luck with landing Skot's jump seat. Hope to see it fitted if we have the meeting.
Cheers
Roger

Roger, I think your safe, they tell me its not contagious. The doctor told me if I buy a fancy flat screen telly with my baby bonus it shouldn't happen again. A catch up in Oct would be great, I should have a running engine by then!
