Help needed in Melbourne

Hello All

I'm in melbourne after just picking up a syncro that I had freighted down from Cairns sight unseen. Already I've had some problems with the vehicle and I need to drive it back to Mallacoota some 523 away. I'm staying in central Melbourne for the next 2 days. Already replaced the battery (stuffed) and I've noticed coolant pouring out after driving. Rang Volks Affair and Volks Power and both closed. Can anyone advise where I can buy the necessary and correct coolant, wiper blades, fuses, worm drive clamps from.Bit hard in Mallacoota. The vehicle is on a temporary registration permit and I need to get it home for RWC and registration. Also have to run in new Conti motor that was fitted with only 20kilometers on the clock but left standing for a long long time with only a weekly turning over over the engine and tyres.Any advise would be appreciated. Will give a more detailed account of the whole experience when all is revealed and what develops on the way home.

Regards

Michael

Michael, you should be able to get clamps and fuses from any motor parts store or even a large servo. You could get away with tap water just to get you home and then do a proper coolant flush and fill with the correct stuff once you are home and sure you've found all the leaks.

If you are in central Melbourne then there is an Autobarn on Elizabeth street near the Vic market. Golf wiper blades are the same so you should be able to get them there.

If i can help with tools or my back lane to work then i'm just a bit north of the CBD, call me on 0417 352782

Hi Michael,

It sounds like you're in a spot of bother there. Volkwerke in Greensborough, whom I'd also recommend for Syncro parts and servicing, is closed until this Monday, 11 Jan. I have heard people speak well of Volkshome out in Thomastown, but I'm not sure whether they'd be open, and doubt whether they'd have many Syncro parts, but you could try. Other people on this forum might be able to advise you about other places. Someone recommended a place out near the airport - was it Roger? Perhaps there are others mechanics on our newly devised directory?

If you need somewhere to stay, you'd be welcome at our place in Northcote. The shed in our back yard where our Syncro normally lives is empty because ours is still broken down in Euroa, so you could park it in there and camp in it (our Syncro doubles as a granny flat), or you'd be welcome to occupy a spare room indoors. Anyway, I gather getting home ASAP is the name of the game, so this may not be appropriate. We do have a very underutilised old Toyota which you're welcome to borrow if you need to do some running around.

Best of luck in any case! Let us know if there's anything specific we can do to help.

Francesca.

UPDATE

I have spoken to Michael and the vehicle is driveable but a risk to drive any more than a short distance, certainly not to Mallacoota..  He is bringing it to my place and I will see what I can do with the coolant leak, which is his primary concern.  From his description, the problem appears to be confined to the expansion tank which, I hope, will be relatively easy to fix.

Sorry, I didn't see your update, Les. With a bit of luck you can sort it out by yourselves. If you need any parts Volksrepair may be able to help, I guess.

Michael has been to my place and the problem appears to be that the level sensor in the expansion tank was not sealing properly.  To be as sure as possible that the tank itself did not have a hair crack, I took it out, cleaned it thoroughly and inspected it.  Fingers crossed, we have found and fixed it.

The reconditioned engine (Conti, Bribie Island , does anyone know about them?) is very quiet and very smooth.

Hi Micheal,

Sounds like you’re pretty well sorted with Les. Don’t forget about the VW dealers for coolant (there’s one in Werribee). May be expensive, but at least they’re open. At one stage I was using a BMW coolant which was supposed to be the same, but was cheaper. Can’t remember the exact type though.

Les may have Peter Kestel’s contact details in Bateman’s Bay. He’s done plenty of his own work on his Syncro, and would probably be able to give you good advice on where to get things in the South East corner of the country.

Hi Les. I bought a 2wd t3 a couple of years ago for my son with a fresh conti motor. It came with a receipt for work done for $7500 of which $4600 was for reco conti motor. We only sold it a couple of months ago and it ran like a clock. As you said Les very quiet and smooth. I'd recommend them. Bill.
Hi Michael, sounds like I am a bit late but if you still need help I am in Thornbury about 10km from cbd and happy to help. Greg

Thank you you all for your offers of support and help.Sorry for not responding earlier but staying at a friends house and a bit awkward to get to computer.  Les many thanks for your personal help. Unfortunately the problem was'nt fixed and I've just got back to Mallacoota this evening after having the syncro flat bedded on a RACV tow truck. Pretty rotten day to drive back,38 degrees, but the temp gauge went way over the right with the fan thumping on. However, after consulting with you Les, I was inclined to think that the temp gauge was inaccurate as the red warning light didn't come on and that the secondary expansion tank, the water no where near boiling. But eventually after labouring up a hill near Yallourn on came the warning light. I stopped immediately to find coolant dripping out of the  'T' junction where the pipe from the fan and the inlet to the main engine block meet. Allowed to cool down, topped up with G12+ and some spring water then proceeded slowly for another 10 k's until light came on again and thats as far as I got. Ring RACV, mechanic didn't want to know about it, Total care took over. I only hope that I havn't cooked the engine for running it so long over the gauge marker. It seemed to me that perhaps the radiator could have been blocked as the secondary expansion tank neither heated up nor did it rise or fall. Quite inert. Anyway starts up first time and sounds smooth on start up but a terrible rattling sound, almost tinny whenever the the accelerator pedal was depressed too hard to the floor and the engine is under load. Had to ease it up very gradually to avoid this tinny rattling noise. Will see what my mechanic makes of it on Monday. Lesson to be learnt, don't buy off Ebay sight unseen. Mind you, wonder what predicament I might have been in driving back from Cairns.. Hasn't been a great start to the year, but I'm hoping for the best.

Michael, the sound you describe sounds like pinging. It is caused by pre ignition of the air fuel mixture. When an engine runs hot it will usually ping. If it does it when cold it is possible the people who rebuilt your engine used pistons that increased the compression ratio. Have a look at the go westy write up on chinese pistons. Try using the highest octane fuel and listening for a change. I hope the cooling system is not a big (expensive) fix. Greg

Hi Greg/Les

Good comment, the tinny rattle does sound a like a ping and yes it gets worse when the engine heats up, not nearly so noticeable when cold. Les did you change the temp sensor over on the top of coolant bottle?

Hello All

I'm in melbourne after just picking up a syncro that I had freighted down from Cairns sight unseen..

Regards

Michael

If it is pinging, the timing could be too far advanced also.

'tinny rattling noise'  makes me think of piston slap, induced by running it too  hot, but I hope it's not that.

On a waterboxer engine if it acts like the radiator is clogged, or the main coolant pipes are clogged
( and you know it's not a thermostat problem ) and it can't sustain running without overheating or boiling over, you start to think about exhaust gases getting into the coolant at the heads/head gaskets.  It's a pretty common head gasket failure mode.

and during diagnosis, 'it looks' exactly like main pipes clogged, but it's not that.

I have been able to able to determine which cylinder was allowing exhaust gases into the coolant with a leak down test,
and sometimes even with a compression test, if there are bubbles going to the pressure bottle during either of these tests, that's it....exhaust getting into the coolant, at the engine, and that immediately displaces the coolant - what you end up with is very hot engine, stone cold radiator.   Try bleeding the cooling system, if you do have this symptom going on, that will make it normally for a short while, like half an hour.  I once drove 400 miles, stopping about every 35 minutes to cool down, add water/coolant, bleed, then proceed until the next time, 35 minutes later.  New head gaskets fixed it perfectly.

Michael
