Hi Just purchased my 1st T3
It started life as a Basic Syncro Transporter van March 1992
Was converted to a camper pop top a good few years ago by the 2nd owner as well as seating for 4 (RocknRoll bed)
Needs a bit of Love (rust repairs and Mechanicals) and then additional seating for 5
will update as i progress
Nice Camperize syncro you have there Gaz.
Unusual setup there with the middle drivers side awning style window - Was it originally a panel van?
I have done the same rear side corner rust repair in a couple of my 2wd vans. Looks so much better with the new panel in there.
Yours looks fairly rust free other than that.
Yep believe it was a Panel Van for its 1at few years
Little bit of progress fabricated some of the lower panel today
What was removed well was a lot more than pictured gotta love spot welds
The repair in my photo was the second go as I had a tyre explode on me which ripped the replaced lower rear corner almost off and dented all around it including the battery tray.
Took quite a bit of massaging to get it reasonably straight.
The joys of classy and classic car ownership

Looks good but
Agree…they are a labour of love… but such capable and practical vehicles!
Nice work.
As noted by yours, often the case is that the rot gets the edge of the “battery tray” in next to the tail light.
I found that out when the tyre exploded as it tore pieces of rust off.
You can do an ugly job to that as you cant see it so welds don’t need to be perfect…
Its worth drilling a hole to the centre of the battery tray X around 10mm in diameter to drain and help stop it rusting again.
Little bit more done
Started work on the front suspension and CVs
Small bubble in the paint
Dont think this upper ball joint has ever been replaced
One of the bigger issue to deal with
Did not even notice this doosy when i inspected
They bend the body panel to match the shit door repair
Wow, that is dodgy.
Might need a replacement door and bend that front panel straight?
Yep new door and also a tailgate to be replaced at some point
Little update been replacing all bushing’s and bearings etc on the front
OMG what a pain it was to replace the lower swing arm bush
Wheel bearings replaced another root of a job
Looking for leads on front Bump stops Go Westy has these but with Freight and exchange rate its like $300 +
Wow, that is a job that most of us wont even bother with.
Do you have a press to get the bushes in or use a home made system with washers, bolts and nut?
I just have a small 6 tonne press bought from super cheap way back in 2011
Tried a few things to get it in mostly overthinking all up 3hrs of no progress
Then just do or die moment kept applying pressure and lube till the lip popped in and pushed through
So Near Side bush pushed in today
As mentioned its a little tricky i think i got this in on the 28th attempt.
Cleaned and painted
Just awaiting the Bump stops to arrive from GoWesty before i reassemble the front end
Nice work…its actually difficult to get any mechanics to work on these vans lately so you have done a brilliant job and saved heaps doing it yourself.
