Hi Guys

Have my t3 syncro with standard 14inch rims and roade tyres. Looking at upgrading to 15inch with 4x4 tyres. Any advice? Apparently Ford Focus 108mm stud spacing rims fit? Standard rims with 30mm ofset..

Brent,

One of the best tyres to use is the B F Goodrich All Terrain, not cheap but a very competent tyre on bitumen and off road.  They are no longer available in 14”, which is why quite a few of us are now running 15” rims so that we can continue to use this tyre.  If you are having new wheels built, you can go to 7” wide and the correct offset for 15” is 27.5 mm.  Let us know where you are and we might be able to put you in touch with a good wheel maker.

now does this change the speedo reading ? if so how do you fix this problem. I have heard of people getting booked for speeding once they put bigger tyres on

I have heard Mercedes rims in 15inch are suitable - I don't have them but apparently they work (correct offset) and are fairly easy to get. They even look kind of similar to the VW wheels.

My 15 inch alloys run 235 x 75 15 BFG's and the wheels work well in the 14 inch guards with a wheel offset of 35mm. Never heard of the Ford Focus option used before.

Welcome to the club by the way.

Cheers,

Brent,

The T3 bolt pattern is 5X112mm. The Syncro is more forgiving than the
2wd when it comes to offset. A wheel 6"-7" wide at offsets ET23-ET45
should fit w/o clearance problems. Do take care to check the size of
the hole for the stud as many Mercedes cars used 12mm bolts instead of
the 14mm used on Syncros. The lughole seats may need to be machined if
you want to use the factory lugnuts. The radius of the seats in the MB
wheels are smaller.

There are other vehicles with the 5X112mm such as on Audi and later
model VW's. However, the centrebore becomes a problem. The Syncro
needs at least 66.7mm vs. Audi wheels which are 57mm.

Weight rating is another consideration. Make sure the wheels you
acquire are rated to the same or greater weight than your Syncro.
There are are great number of people using under rated wheels on T3's.
I have not heard anyone having any issues in my part of the world.
There is always am element of risk when using parts not originally
designed for your vehicle.

As for speedometers reading low when using taller tyres, you can have
any competent instrument specialist calibrate your speedo to match
your tyre size. In my experience, the VW speedos are optimistic by
about 5% anyway. Often times, a taller tyre actually compensates to
make the speedo read more accurately than stock. At worst, get a GPS
and read your speed that way. From that, you can estimate what your
actual speed is in your speedometer. After a while, you should be able
to get used to the higher or lower reading from your speedo and adjust
your speed accordingly.

No they wont.

Adam,

I changed from 27 X 8.8 X 14 BFGs to 215 X 75 X 15 BFGs, I did a rolling circumference measurement (a document describing how to do this test is available if you want it) to determine the difference and it came out to 103%, so the speedo is reading 100 kph for actual 103 kph.

What I DON’T have and would like to get are the figures for the standard (i.e. as delivered) Syncro 14” wheel/tyre so that I can establish what the difference is between the original spec and the 27 X 8.5 BFG.

Ben Tan’s reply reminds me that I should have added that these measurements give the rolling circumference of the tyre only.  The initial accuracy of the speedo is another matter and has to be measured separately.

Hi Brent

There are lots of Audi and Merc wheels out there that can be made to fit and BenT has highlighted the major issues, centrebore and lug size.

Do a google on "Syncro, alternative wheels" and you'll find lots of examples in the UK and US. It all depends on what you can find locally. There are US wheel makers that can supply suitable alloys (load rated) via Bob Jane T Mart with an offset of around 30 but they are a bit over the top in terms of looks and price ($240 each)

Mercedes C class steel rims with part no #202 400 0002 6J x 15H2 ET31 will fit straight on. They are 15" and will take a 215 X 75 X 15 BFG tyre. The centrebore is perfect, you just need lugnuts with a tapered seat rather than the radiused standard ones. You can get 2 sets of nuts in the post from Just Kampers in the UK very cheaply.  www.justkampers.com

I'm running this combination on my van but i would prefer some heavier duty rims but as BenT says there are lots of people running around with these rims and being steel they are less likely to fail catastrophically. The BFGs are great tyres but can be a bit noisy at lower speeds and there are much cheaper options available in an all terrain pattern from the likes of Cooper, Goodyear etc which would work just as well. Something about the BFGs looks just right on a syncro though. The Merc rims are only 6inches wide and the tyreshop i used had a bit of trouble getting my tyres on because of the width.

The problem with the Merc rims is they are not load rated, the gross weight of a c class is 1,945kg and a camper syncro is likely to be about 2,300kg.

Have a chat with a wheel supplier and see if you can get anywhere. It all gets in the too hard basket when you tell them what car it is and they can't look up wheels on the computer but the specs you need are 5x112 ET between 27.5 and 35 and 6-7inch width.

You can also get new rims made using the original 14" centres which is what Les did.

If you find anything else let us all know.

The standard Michelin 205x14C on 6" rims (as supplied to most Australian syncros) was 481 rev/km with a loaded dia of 661.

BFG 215/75x15 is 481 rev/km and a loaded dia of 661mm

Hi Brent, since I just did this whole Syncro tyre wheel thing,I thought you might want to read this.I run Audi 16x7 wheels, with an off-set of 45.I did have, for three years, 225/60/16 roadies, that had a diameter of 676.4mm,with no spacers, but no centre cap on rear.
I wanted to put on new A/T tyres ,so I naturally thought BFs were the go.215/70/16's were my first choice. After some research I found that these tyres would increase the diameter to 707.4mm,with a speed differance of 4.5%.on top of what I had already lost on standard wheel size.I was also worried about tyre scrubbing, since I knew that,215/75/15,on a 7'' rim would scrub on 2/3 lock.More research needed.
There is not to many choices out there for A/T tyres, without losing to much acceleration or damaging something.
I did find and go with,Yoky Geolander A/TS 215/65/16,this tyre has a diametre of 686mm,with a speed loss of 1.4% from my roadies. The tyre is better than expected on road and great off-road.And still maintanes a aggressive look. With no scrubbing,I think my offset helps. The speed differance is hardly notiable.
Its not easy picking a good combination for our vehicles and there is not much selection,my advice, dont go to just one tyre shop. They will often just try to sell you what they have in stock.Check out brouches and all related tyre specs.Do the mathamatics, you want to get to your destanation one day.Dont buy tyres on looks.
I know this probably hasnt helped you much.but hope it was some help in this rather complicated issue.

You can get 2 sets of nuts in the post from Just Kampers in the UK very cheaply.  www.justkampers. com

Michael,

Ken is hold up with Hartmut @ Port Macquarie after another successful trip down the Point Plommer Road. That road is nothin for a syncro.

I'm sure he will reply shortly.

Cheers,

Skot
