First I fitted 2wd front springs. I also fitted a set of old man emu shocks. For what is the cheapest option re raising a syncro I think the resulting ride is fantastic. The hub to fender measurment is 47-48cm, the rear needs a small spacer to level it out. While this first job went so well I cant say the same for the second, fitting the bmw e30 brake booster. After reading a couple of american blogs I thought this should be quite easy, alas due to the fact we have our steering wheels on the right it was a troublesome fit. So basicly the issues are 1.the booster will hit the heater box to the left 2.the top will hit the body 3.the master cylinder reservoir will touch instrument cluster to the right. Good news - it does not touch at the bottom, horay!!! The fix for these problems? !1. cut the edge off the heater box 2.elongate the lower pedal box mounting holes 3.slide the cluster to the right on its mounts as much as possible. Not to be attempted by the faint harted. The result is quite good, alot less strain at the pedal. Greg E

A friend of mine had a modified booster in a Golf. Unfortunately they went to far and with about 20 grams pressure on the pedal locked all 4 wheels.

Phill, I have attacked a couple of culvits (best I could do in suburban Melbourne) and bottoming does not seem an issue. Both springs have the same gauge wire, the syncros are probably wound tighter but it does not appear to be much of a differance. Especially since you have compressed 2wd spring much more at the point of hitting the stops. The booster rebuild sounds like a great idea, how do they get more power out of the same size diaphram? Hi Francesca. Hart and I put new OME shocks in my acquisition. It has an extra spacer (two in total) at the rear and overall has a fair bit of ground clearance. I have found the new shocks to be excellent but you do sacrifice comfort. The roads around Port Macquarie are not in good shape and so I do experience a rather rough ride over bumps, holes and repaired bits. However I have done a little bit of rough work on a farm road and they have been great.
Like many things in life it is a compromise!!!
Cheers, Peter

Francesca, if you look at the front springs on your syncro you will see they sit on the shock absorber. VW did this to make room for the front drive shaft on the syncro. On a 2wd they sit on the lower control arm so they need to be much longer.
I have no idea, and I really do not understand it. The booster was reconditioned and (over) modified.
