Hit a wall/Wiring loom

Hey gang, i have had a look and it appears that the loom in question
is the main wiring loom, make sense?
Next possible pain in the arse is the actual in cab switches or face
plate, this one may make things a little tricky.

Standard Transporter running no diff locks only VC; next i am trying
to put both front and back with diff locks; the switches/activators in
cab have a small loom at rear of Switch panel running to the computer
board consisting of DarkBlue LightBl, BrownBlack, Brown, GreyBlue,
Grey and BlackWhite wiring. I am pretty sure that this wiring is not a
standard part of wiring in syncros world wide.
No i havent pulled the dash apart yet..
Can anyone tell me any different??

Crikey this is ongoing, also previous owner had a fridge and other
electricals running in vehicle so there is excess wiring in parts
throughout the car. Is there a Syncro wiring diagram anywhere. Anyone
on the North Coast really know Syncros inside out as i fear i wont
have him on the road before i start new job JULY. May have to hand
over to someone else to finish job, dont really want to but need options.

Any chance of a mud map/diagram in pencil or pen?? Scan and send to me?
Do U or anyone else have the double diff locks and is the main fuse
box any different?
Is this the 6wires from the back of activator switch in cab?
If so then the only one i will have to play with is the Black+ to
ignition what happens to all the earths, should i do just that and
rewire and earth to body or other?
I will say thanks as this had me worried to the point of giving up
before i even started. U know the usual "what i need more parts" etc.

Did you look at the Bentley?
Just do the same for the front diff lock.

Yeh been studying the bentley alot. But the only reference found so
far is that page 97.178 "differential switches on instrument panel are
vacuum operated and do not appear on the wiring diagram" on same page
there is also Emergency Flasher switch which is what the unknown
part(what2) is according to the Americans.
Only other references found for this are that of the air tubing and
resevoirs.

Unless u have another page reference i was just going to wire it up to
the ignition switch so as when syncro is running or at startup the
power to the switches is there. After i had a feed i realised what u
were saying and just to basically "bodge" the wiring so as to give the
panel/switches power.

How to make sure the diff locks are unlocked first??
Also stupid question so here is, When i drop the front diff&VC out,
and split VC from diff will i loose the VC fluid?

Do we have an idea as to wht "WhatisThis" is in photos?
Description is that of a small three point male connection attached to
a small computer board. It would appear to be inside the cab as it is
wrapped in that old crappy foam insulation.

The switches do not have power, only the lights in them.
Just pick up the feed as in the Bentley and run it to both lights and then to the contacts in the diff locks to earth.(brown)

Hi andrew,

When you take out the front diff you can put it on a table with the propshaft flange pointing to the ceiling.

Then you unbolt the “nose” part of the front diff and the oil level inside the front diff won’t be higher then the lower part of the front diff, so no front diff gearbox oil will spill on the floor.

The VC fluid is not inside your front diff but inside your VC, You will see a big cylinder inside your front diff, that’s the vc, the heart of your Syncro J

Cheers Mike as not having done this before and only reading whats out there on the web, has made the hole thing somewhat confusing. First timers lesson, didnt want to stuff something and decide that the bloody thing is a pain in the arse and get rid of it altogether. Know what i mean? I have read to many horror storyies about fluid replacement and how the levels of the VC  fluid is something to be exact.

OK any difference in the gearbox bell housings as i suspect the AAN is off a diesel?

Hi Andrew,

It’s not only the vc fluid that has to be exact, it’s also the right viscosity of the oil and, just as important, the state of the “discs” inside the vc. They can’t have scratches in it or anything, one has to test them under a microscope to see if they are still okay when you rebuild a vc. If not, you have to replace them by new ones.

Here’s an overview of the Syncro gearboxes from my site.

A little translation :

Schaltgetrieve hinterachse meaning gearbox

Vorderachsdifferential : front diff

Mit diffsperre : with difflock

Ohne diffsperre : without diff lock

Reifen ; tires

1G, 2G, 3G, 4G : 1st to 4th gear

GG : Gelände gear

Achsübersetzung : crown and pinion

Motor leistung : engine power in KW

Manuel zuschaltbarer allradantrieb : decoupler gearbox

Mit nebenantrieb (nur finland ) : with power take off (only finland )

Hi andrew,

Ehh, are you saying you’re thinking of taking out the vc and replacing it with a solid shaft (plus a decoupler off course), turning it into a 2WD 4x4?

Rebuilding a vc is something you better have done by a company who not only replaces the oil and checks or replace the discs, but also tests it on the right machines to see if the strengthness of the vc is perfect after the rebuild : not too soft, not too strong

I have been glancing recent posts on this subject and i will not be
doing it yet as advantages of VC are obvious at present. No basically
just asking a dumb question as i have undertaken the rebuilding or re
fitting of a non running vehicle and so far i am learning more by just
asking the questions rather than reading info from the web. Make sense?

No Solid shaft just yet i suppose it all depends on the state of the
VC when i finally get my toy "moving"; thats just what i need a busted
VC that just may put me over the edge..
No not touching the VC, after reading all the info on the web it is
above my head after all this is my first syncro but not my first T3.
Just needed a straight answer to a straight question.

What is suggested gearbox and diff oils viscousity??

Gearbox AAN is from a petrol engine. Diff ratio 4.86 with diff lock. Overall in top gear 4.15 and 29kmh per 1000 rpm. Front diff should be ACU or ADH with diff lock.

Gear oil must be GL4 not GL5 and takes 4.5 ltr from overhaul or approx 3.0 ltr for refill. Fill to 10mm below filler plug hole.

These gearboxes have a lubrication problem, so use expensive oil (synthetic). GL5 or GL4 for front and GL4 only for gearbox. The genuine VW oil is very good and recomended if you can get to a dealer. The is a lot about this on the US forums.

Andrew, can you send me your phone number and a time to phone as I may be able to help.
