Home grown maintenance

Dave,

What's typically available near me from VW parts suppliers is german product VAICO VA-012 Plus coolant, violet in colour. On the label it states "It should be used all-year-round in a mixing ratio of 1 to 1 to provide the necessary protection against frost, overheating, corrosion and calcium deposits." Not sure which G12 Plus label you've been reading.

Interestingly a Google search for "G12 Plus" also brings up reference to a "G12 Plus Plus", for which it states "this the latest generation of coolant from VW/Audi. G12 Plus Plus coolant can be mixed with either blue G11 or pink G12 coolant like G12 Plus can, but it also includes updated additives for the latest generation of VW/Audi engines. G12 Plus Plus provides maximum corrosion protection for all engine parts and maximum heat transfer for improved cooling in modern high performance engines. Coolant is concentrate, to be mixed 1:1 with water."

Goto: http://www.ecwerks.com/fluids-and-lubricants/coolant/coolant-vw-audi-g12-plus-plus-1-5l-bottle.html

Unlike G12 Plus, which is "silicate free", G12 Plus Plus has, amongst other things, silicate added, for newer generation motors such as the Phaeton, goto: http://www.volkswagen.com/vwcms/master_public/virtualmaster/en2/unternehmen/volkswagen_genuine/genuine_parts/coolant_additive/new_recipe_for_premium_vehicles.html . It now begs the question, "is G12 Plus Plus" designed only for newer generation engines such as the Phaeton as stated, so by inference not relevant to the WBX 2.1?

If G12 Plus Plus ever reaches our shores, will both products be available in parallel or will "Plus Plus" supersede "Plus" and “G11”? Pandoras Box on coolants opened yet again?

In any event, I’ll stand corrected if previous generation G11 offers superior corrosion protection compared to its newer generation ... G12 Plus.

Cheers.

Ken

On the G12++ bottle there is no claims of having anticorrosion qualities written on it. Despite G11 having the same active ingredient Ethanediol, G11 claims to have anticorrosion qualities which is written in bold. Believe it or not its a personal choice at the end of the day. I chose G11 this time round and hopefully it will slow down the melting of all those nasty metals
Cheers Dave

Still want to change the coolant from G12+ that was in it when I bought the car to G11. Do you think 4 bottles of G11 is enough coolant? Just kampers recommend that and that is how many bottles I have at present.

I sent a reply to this earlier but it hasn’t come through; try again.

David,

I spoke to Lloyd Davies (Volkwerke, Melbourne) last night about this.   He continues to use G11 and says that 12+ might or might not offer any advantages but he doesn’t do enough MV engines these days to be able to form an opinion.   He uses a 30% coolant/water mix and says that this is adequate for Australia .   He mentioned a case some years ago of seeing an MV engine running on 100% and that the hoses were being eaten away as a result.

In respect of what’s written on the container, consumer protection legislation around the world is making manufacturers a lot more circumspect about claims made for their product.   Rest assured that the German coolants designed for Mercedes and BMW will be of the best available quality and will not induce runaway corrosion.

Les

Ken’s notes below indicate that the G12+ and G12++ are upgrades for recent engines.  As Lloyd said to me last night, the G11 is the original spec and is adequate for the MV engine.   That said, it is unlikely that the G11 would be detrimental to the MV engine but I would suggest that the 30% would be adequate.

The syncro ran beautifully apart from a slight overheating and engine dying after the hill climb (22 degrees in sections with max load in car) just before OReileys. I let it cool down and the turbo fan came on and after 30 minute rest the remainder of the drive was all down hill and problem free however I got a bit anxious watching the temperature gauge going up and down.

Greg,

This was discussed fairly widely recently.   Interestingly, Lloyd Davies (Volkwerke) continues to use the G11 in the MV engines that he rebuilds.   It might eventually come down to which is the more widely available.

Greg,
So at the time, did you gain the undivided attention of the VW dealer to explain his specialised knowledge of the current VAG thinking/recommendations for their own coolants and where T3s fit in this equation? So he said G11 and G12 Plus are definitely NLA? Or are they merely disinterested? Have you googled for latest info on G11 & G12 Plus availability? Is it being inferred an incompatibility issue, if so, what exactly?

I guess sooner or later, when each of us need to obtain new supply, could be the sort of questions each of us may have to delve into.

Greg,

I should have added that Lloyd keeps both in stock.   He continues to use the G11 on MV engines and uses the several G12’s on the European vehicles that specify them.   He is confident that the G11 is completely adequate for the MV.

So you would rely on what a parts salesman tells you?
How in the hell would he know?

Phill,

No, not a parts salesman.
Yes, the parts salesman who has gained my confidence having already demonstrated competence. Rare but worth looking for. Much the same concept as with syncro owners.

Please advise then your own known alternate font of all up to date VAG/T3 knowledge. I take it you know one. TIA.

Cheers.

So you would rely on what a parts salesman tells you?
How in the hell would he know?

Greg,

I suggest that you ring either Volkwerke or Volkspower or both because they both stock G11 and G12.   Forget the Volkswagen Australia “help” line.

A point sometimes missing in discussions such as this is the fact that no vehicle manufacturer tests every new or upgraded product to see if it is suitable for an engine that ceases production twenty years ago.

In a recent conversation with Lloyd Davies about coolant, he said that the G11 was the coolant originally specified for the MV engine and it worked well.

The only way to tell if the later spec G12+ and G12++ is suitable for an engine that has been out of production for 20 years is to run life tests, which is a gigantically expensive process.

We know that G11 works.   We do not know for sure how well G12+ and G12++ works.   Whilst it is unlikely that the G12’s will have any detrimental effects, we do not know that.   They won’t have any improvement in cooling ability.

The safe course is to run the originally specified G11.

VW parts people say that G11 has been replaced by G12++. Not that G12++ is suitable.

We have to be careful not to read something in that is not there.

Don't assume anything.
