Home grown maintenance

Hi everyone,

I went on a 1200km holiday travelling high into the Lamington National Park and kicking back at the Cottontree caravan Park on the Sunshine Coast during recent school holidays. Both places are highly recommended as places to visit. The syncro ran beautifully apart from a slight overheating and engine dying after the hill climb (22 degrees in sections with max load in car) just before OReileys. I let it cool down and the turbo fan came on and after 30 minute rest the remainder of the drive was all down hill and problem free however I got a bit anxious watching the temperature gauge going up and down.
Im due for a service and want to do it myself for a number of reasons. The coolant that is in it is G12 plus and looks very watered down. Where do you empty the coolant from? Ive read the summary in the files of how to replace it and think it cant be that difficult to do. Also do you empty the engine oil by simply removing the oil filter or is there a sump plug? Do I need a new washer for the sump plug or just screw back whats there? Ive changed air filter, rotar arm and distributor cap and want to put new spark plugs in as well. What gap do you use for the spark plugs?

Im also after the swinging latch from the 1/4 window drivers side for the T3 if anyone can help?

Where theres a will there is a way I believe

Grateful for any tips on routine home maintenance

Cheers Dave
Latches going off on ebay in 11 hours. Greg E

How hot did it get? It should not overheat.

That is how G12++ looks.

Sump plug Make sure that you use a German filter. Do not buy from Repco, Supercheap etc.

New washer

They are pre gapped.
Make sure that you use the oval filter, not the cheap round one.
Hi Greg,

Well done. Thanks for the tip on the latches

Cheers Dave

David,

The fan should have come on during the climb.   Generally, the fan will start when the needle gets to vertical or a little beyond.   My fan kicks in when the left edge of the needle gets to the right edge of the LED and I would expect that to be typical.   During summer, the fan starts in ordinary driving once the needle gets past the LED.   If your fan is coming in about that point, you shouldn’t be getting any power loss.

The coolant looks quite murky and it really isn’t possible to tell by looking at it if it is OK or not.   The system contains 17.5 litres and a complete change is expensive.   Even at the minimum ratio of 40% coolant, that’s 7 litres of 12+.

Thanks for the good advice,

Regarding the overheating. The situation: 30 degrees outside, 32km climb, full load, a lot of single lane road which means stopping starting.... The last section of road was very steep, the motor lost revs as if it ran out of puff and this occurred exactly at the entrance to the Green Mountaian Camp Ground. The wife wanted me to put the A/C on that day which I believe made the cooling system even hotter. The important thing was I stopped, Couldnt see any coolant leakage, let the whole thing cool down and the motor ran sweet thereafter. I strongly believe the A/C was the contributing factor to the overheating and the poor quality of coolant. Im going for the Febi Bilstein G11 this time.

Cheers Dave

Dave,

The added heat load of the air conditioner is the most likely culprit in the case.

The perceived quality of the coolant is not a factor.  The heat conductivity of the correct coolant is no different to plain water.   The coolant has two functions.   The first is to provide a lower freezing point and a higher boiling point.   The second is corrosion prevention; in Australia , it is the corrosion prevention aspect that is highly important.   Rest assured that the quality of any of the German coolants is more than adequate.  The problem that you experienced would effectively have been the same with plain water in the system.

The temp gauge in the Syncro isn’t a masterpiece of precision but it is more than enough to show you the normal operating range, what difference operating the air conditioner makes and the point at which the fan will turn on.

I am familiar with the road that you were on.   My home town is Beaudesert (have been away from there for a lifetime but still have family there) and I still get up to O’Reilleys from time to time.   With an ambient of 30 and with full load, I would expect the fan to be running frequently, particularly if you were experiencing stop/start running.   It sounds as if the fan is coming far too late.   I would have to think about why this is happening.   With 17.5 litres of coolant and no air in the system, there is no way that it should be overheating.

To ensure that there is no air in the system, open the bleeder on the top of the radiator with the engine idling and at normal operating temperature; you should not get any bubbles coming out.   If there are bubbles, leave it cracked open until the bubbles stop.   There is also a bleeder on the top of the thermostat; this bleeds back to the coolant reservoir.   It is vital that the reservoir remains full while checking for air, particularly when the radiator bleed is cracked open.

To get a handle on what is happening, you must watch the needle; without that, you just don’t have a starting point to work out what is happening.

Hi Les,

I will top up the coolant with a bit of G12+ and check for air. The walks we did around OReilys are spectacular like to Morans Falls. It only cost $5 each per night on the camp ground compared to $400 at the resort next door and its a thousand times more fun camping in the Syncro.

Cheers Dave.

Dave,

The correct state for the cooling system is the reservoir completely full (that’s literally up to the brim) and the catch tank above the min mark.   This ensures that the movement of the coolant is contained within the system at all times and that the system functions as designed.   After checking for air and bleeding if necessary, make sure that the system is as stated above.

check the operation of the thermostat for 1 also if the cores in the radiator are blocked from dirt or rust particales a radiator service may be required     bob

Hi Greg,

Did my best to bid for the latches but someone had the system rigged going always one dollar higher. Still looking for drivers side 1/4 window latch due to someone trying to break in in the past and breaking the existing. Can any one help?

does a radiator service include a coolant change as well? I have given the radiator fins a good clean and bled the system, is there something else to do? Still want to change the coolant from G12+ that was in it when I bought the car to G11. Do you think 4 bottles of G11 is enough coolant? Just kampers recommend that and that is how many bottles I have at present.

Cheers Dave

Both places are highly recommended as places to visit. The syncro ran beautifully apart from a slight overheating and engine dying after the hill climb (22 degrees in sections with max load in car) just before OReileys. I let it cool down and the turbo fan came on and after 30 minute rest the remainder of the drive was all down hill and problem free however I got a bit anxious watching the temperature gauge going up and down.

Do I need a new washer for the sump plug or just screw back whats there? Ive changed air filter, rotar arm and distributor cap and want to put new spark plugs in as well. What gap do you use for the spark plugs?

I'm at a loss to understand what is at all wrong with VW's latest coolant concentrate ... G12 Plus. How is reverting to G11, an earlier version, a better alternative?

I prefer 50:50 mix with distilled water, gives me some latitude if I drop any and can top it up with straight distilled water should I get caught short of concentrate.

does a radiator service include a coolant change as well? I have given the radiator fins a good clean and bled the system, is there something else to do? Still want to change the coolant from G12+ that was in it when I bought the car to G11. Do you think 4 bottles of G11 is enough coolant? Just kampers recommend that and that is how many bottles I have at present.

Cheers Dave

They're tinted.

On the G12++ bottle there is no claims of having anticorrosion qualities written on it. Despite G11 having the same active ingredient Ethanediol, G11 claims to have anticorrosion qualities which is written in bold. Believe it or not its a personal choice at the end of the day. I chose G11 this time round and hopefully it will slow down the melting of all those nasty metals
Cheers Dave
