House Battery

Has anyone installed a deep cycle battery in the engine compartment.. Thinking there may be enough room for a 120 ah battery behind the tail light ? Looking to save some space inside the van..

Mark

That's where the diesel battery lives.
Phill,

The diesel battery has an exclusion zone with a seal to try and isolate it from the engine heat (not sure how effective it is though).

Maybe that would be advisable if the battery is put in the engine bay - make sure it is separated from the engine heat.

I thought T2's had the battery in the engine compartment off to one side?

They certainly do and almost always the battery boils over depositing acid into the battery tray and rusts it out.

A plastic tray of some form should help prevent this.

The height behind the tail lights in a T3 is much lower, so watch room for terminals. Maybe a sealed battery would help.

I am not sure on lithium batteries but don't think the like heat.

Scott, the std location for the battery on a T2 would only see any heat when you turn off (heat rising from engine).

Richard

Hi Richard,

I would say the battery would get very hot on a hot day when stuck in stop-go traffic - which is where most of the damage would happen as T2 engines pump out loads of heat (actually T3 engines do too).

Cheers,

Skot

Regards the alternative battery - there are a few sizes and shapes available in the gel mat type AGM batteries.
I saw a Syncro last week and the owner had a multiple stack of GEL type batteries - each battery was the size of a thick paper back book.
And these batteries can be mounted in any position - stacked flat, or on edge.

Here's one for example - not the ones I was looking for - but gives an idea - and can be mounted in any position.

I have my “house” / backup battery under the passenger’s seat, close to the van’s battery along with appropriate isolation / charging installation.

These batteries can get quite large the more ah you want. I had a 200ah agm that was way to big and heavy and opted for a 100ah which sits in a box behind the passengers seat, that box has a seat top and acts as a small stool.
Not sure if you get to see the attached pic

The last link I posted was a compact GEL battery - 135 amps
these are the dimensions - a better battery than a wet AGM
  • LENGTH 330 mm
  • WIDTH 175 mm
  • HEIGHT 215 mm

Anyone have a photo of this battery instal ? I didn't know about other T3's having only owned Syncros.
On a side note I highly recommend CIL insurance after a recent couple of incidents they paid out in full and were very helpful.
