The diesel battery has an exclusion zone with a seal to try and isolate it from the engine heat (not sure how effective it is though).
Maybe that would be advisable if the battery is put in the engine bay - make sure it is separated from the engine heat.

That's where the diesel battery lives.

A plastic tray of some form should help prevent this.

I thought T2's had the battery in the engine compartment off to one side?Peter

The height behind the tail lights in a T3 is much lower, so watch room for terminals. Maybe a sealed battery would help.
I am not sure on lithium batteries but don't think the like heat.
Scott, the std location for the battery on a T2 would only see any heat when you turn off (heat rising from engine).
Richard
I would say the battery would get very hot on a hot day when stuck in stop-go traffic - which is where most of the damage would happen as T2 engines pump out loads of heat (actually T3 engines do too).
Cheers,

On a side note I highly recommend CIL insurance after a recent couple of incidents they paid out in full and were very helpful.
