Hydraulic lifters

I have just returned from 2300KM trouble free run to Esperance in the South West of WA. Fabulous trip thanks for the info on tyre rotations before leaving.

Started the engine this morning and I have a noisy lifter on the LH side.
This is the first time its happened.
I have been running Mobil 1 for about 5000ks. (first time).
Has anyone got any clues why this could have just started.

The noise went away after 20 mins or so running. Greg

Greg,

This seems to happen to quite a few MV engines.  It happens to mine occasionally and I just give it a dose of lifter cleaner and it goes away.

I heard a funny story a long time back when the very first T3’s were imported to Australia .  Lanocks had one of the first batch that got left in the holding yard for several months.  Someone wanted to move it and got an immense fright when it fired up because all of the lifters had drained out.  It appears that few people had got around to reading up the service manual and no-one knew about the hydraulic lifters!

Les

20 minutes is OK for them to pump up. I change the oil every 5000km anyway..

Thanks Gentleman, it did give me a fright. Is there any particular lifter cleaner you use Les? Greg

If it has only happened once, I wouldn't worry about it.

The lifter noise you are experiencing is quite normal and the grade of engine oil will affect the bleed off overnight.....most t3's after a long drive will overnight bleed off and experience a rattle on first start up......I have found that synthetic oil to be a disadvantage with both low pressure buzzer sound offs and lifter rattle....have dumped more of this oil to rectify the above...I have always stuck to a 20-50 mineral oil and at times a 15-40.

Richard,

It is a mineral oil detergent/solvent that is added to the crankcase oil.   It circulates through the oil system and dissolves the gunk that can accumulate in the hydraulic lifters.   It can stay in the oil until the next oil change.  Repco, Bursons and others all stock it.
