Ignition lock removal

Morning all. I'm replacing the ignition lock and switch. I have watched a you tube clip on "how to do" and it seems relatively straight forward. However i seem to remember reading somewhere having to drill a hole in the casing to release the steering lock. Anyone know about this? Thanks Bill. PS. The reason for replacing is because it appears the lock is flogged out from the weight of too many keys resulting in the swinging keys causing the ignition to cut out briefly. TKS Bill

Hi Bill. I took mine apart to replace a fused ignition switch and did not have to do any drilling. It was a fairly simple operation once I got the steering wheel off. However not sure if replacing the actual lock adds any issues.

Regards, Peter from Port

Bill,

Without pulling mine apart (again!), it is very straightforward.  Drilling might be required if the lock tongue is jammed but I am just guessing there.

Les

This is the key to the problem. Have heard of this causing problems on many older cars. Stands to reason I suppose that a heavy load of keys acts like a pendulum particularly on Syncro magnet roads grinding away at the lock mechanism as it bounces along. Also surprising what a little graphite puffed into a crunchy stiff mechamism can do to improve it.

Good luck with the repair. Problem is that you probably will now need a separate ignition key which starts the whole problem again unless you can get it keyed to your other locks or you reckon by the time another 20 years roll round it will be the least of your troubles.
