Insurance Advice

Gday All

Pepita passed her second inspection over the pits. The guy thought a couple of the issues were a bit harsh. and didnt even check them.

All good, Just got to get to the bottom of this front wheel noise but not urgently.
Has anyone got advise on what insurance companies to use. Obviously need to do an agreed value as book price might be too low.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Anthony
Hi there,

If yours is a campervan, I'd recommend either CMCA (Caravan and Motorhome Club of Australia - see the website), or the one we went with was CIL (Caravan Insurance Limited). The latter insure to an agreed value, and have a handy list of extras for when you're on the road and things go awry. The premium was also very reasonable when compared to RACV/NRMA etc, who have a hard time even recognising that there is such a thing as a Syncro. Other people have used Shannons for insurance, I think.

Regards,

Francesca.

I use CMCA and they do agreed value. You have to get a valuation and I used a chap up in Queensland. You fill in his forms and send a series of photos and he provides a valuation which CMCA accept. If you paid $x for your vehicle that is what CMCA insure it for to begin with.

I can dig out his details if you go that route. My camper syncro was previously insured with Shannons who insured it as a van at nowhere near its value. CMCA premium was around half Shannons.

I'd definitely check out CIL as Francesca suggests and compare as well.

Let us know how you go as I think it is of interest to everyone

We are with cil. The premium was lower than I expected, they do agreed value and it comes with road side! All the other mobs (inc shannons) would not insure because it is a camper, they called this a modification! Did not try cmca though, these would probably be the only two worth trying if it is a camper. Greg

Hi,

Yes, the CIL roadside assist package was very attractive, plus they are happy to insure for agreed value without a valuation - just over the phone (!). Premium was about half what RACV would have charged. Your vehicle will need to be registered in the 'motorhome' category to qualify, I think. Shannons may be the next best bet if it's a bare van.

When I said 'roadside assist', the CIL package is not the equivalent of the RACV service, but includes the following:
  • Full replacement if the vehicle is a total loss and the incident occurs within two years of its first registration
  • Transport home following emergency medical treatment
  • Cover to get you home if your vehicle is stolen or cannot be driven following an accident
  • Cover for emergency accommodation following an accident, fire or theft
  • Up to $1,000 cover for towing your vehicle to the nearest repairer following a mechanical breakdown
  • No basic excess payable for the first windscreen replacement claim in any one period of insurance
  • Automatic $1,000 contents cover (for contents kept in the Motorhome)
  • Choice of a higher excess to reduce your premium

A friend of mine in NZ sent me this link of a 14 day tour of the South Island to celebrate 60 years of the Bus.  You will see one Syncro in there, ex Telstra by the look of it.

Thought it might be of interest

Bruce

I wish that I had known about this as we're off to Christchurch tommorrow (Friday) morning!

Hi, yes you are right the Syncro is mine and it was an ex Telecom vehicle I imported in 2007, I started the tour in my 1983 Diesel Westfalia but after 1,000mls the head developed a crack just below the injector of No 4 cylinder. After having it welded up the injector threads expanded and then also welded but that necessitated a head removal, in the end to keep up with the tour I transferred the Westy bed, curtains and table etc to the Syncro. 1,500 more miles the Syncro performed faultlessly to finish the Tour on Sunday.

Phill, If you have time in Christchurch to call in? Club night is this Wednesday 28th April.

Wow! Looks fantastic. I'd love to do one of those. Group discount on a shipment of Syncros from Aus to New Zealand for a similar tour of the South Island?? The scenery down there sure is hard to beat....

Has anyone ever looked into the idea of a campervan swap, by the way? I'd be willing to lend ours out for the use of similar somewhere overseas (NZ would be a great start). Just a thought! I seem to remember seeing that the Busman was trying to get something like this happening.

I have often thought about getting a Syncro kitted up here in NZ for the American Syncro owners to either hire or sell with a buy-back clause?

Cost of shipping a Syncro to NZ from Sydney is NZ$2,000 RO-RO one way!

Who knows, you could be onto something there. Yes, not cheap to ship cars around the world.

Dear Phil,
At his invitation I called on Dave and Penny Finnie when in NZ a few years ago and found Dave an absolute VW enthusiast (has the full range of Transporters up to T3 plus a fibre glass bodied VW peculiar to NZ. (no it was not in the shape of a sheep). Both were very friendly and Penny gave us some helpful local knowledge tourist information on the yellow eyed penguin.
Pass on my regards if you do visit them. Their house is not hard to discern - it has a T3 shaped letterbox with Dave & Penny painted on it!
Enjoy your trip but I'd suggest taking Anzac biscuits rather than a book on  underarm bowling.
Cheers
Roger
