Before I bought my Syncro in about 1991/2,
I was aware of a vast number of options that were available for Syncros.
So I interviewed the GM at ATECO in the hope of getting one with some of the special feature offered in Germany.
He wasn't interested and neither was the dealer so we waited for ours to come onto the second hand market,
saved some money,
and have since developed it part way to what way I wanted.
I don't know about decouplers being on that list,
but given the specials they built, for example the ones for the Swiss army,
I would not be surprised.
Once the Syncros were built, VW had a special order division which could do customization,
and nothing seemed like too much trouble from the material that I read.

The matter of what was fitted to the Syncro is a bit bewildering, starting from the fact that the 16” Syncro was not a stand-alone model – it was an option!! There was even a PTO option that allowed buyers in some northern European country to register a Syncro as an agricultural vehicle and hence pay no tax.
Phill Lander is our local source of option documentation; he has the complete original options list and can usually unravel questions when they arise.

Interesting Syncro on GumTree
Rudi is not saying that it is factory fitted, just that it is a decoupler built as per vw's original drawings for the vacuum decoupler. The decoupler most of us bought from florian or syncro services is that decoupler. Vw did not produce a vacuum operated decoupler. The only decoupler vw actually produced was a bowden cable one which was sold on mostly military vehicles.
Interesting that Rudi didn't refit the original front locker when it broke. Greg E

Apparently this has a factory fitted decoupler. I was under the impression
these were never offered by VW?

Hi All,
As previously discussed on this Forum the decoupler was on option in the earlier years. What we have now is just a copy of the real thing. That's why the after-market dealer usually, wants gearbox cone in exchange. Also the wires for the actuator are still there, as Hartmut pointed out a few weeks back. Just hard to find - behind the petrol filter
somewhere. The other end of the cable is behind the glove box with a connection for the globes as Rudi pointed
out to me.
Cheers,

An option offered by VAG was a solid shaft front diff (in place of the VC) and a cable operated decoupler. It was intended for use in extreme terrain and could not be used in normal driving. If used on good grip surfaces, it was possible to destroy a perfectly good gearbox in seconds. It was not an option that VAG pushed except to people who actually had an unavoidable need of it. Electing that option automatically negated the great advantages of the VC system for all other driving.

While decoupler and solid shaft has its place, I appreciate the driving dynamics with the VC in play - stopping distances are incresed by 25% I read somewhere that it acts like a sort of ABS. This I have noticed when emergency braking on the hwy.. Love the high roof looks awesome for full time travel : ) |

Hartmut, interesting - as some of us like the high roof. For me, with my bush driving - not ideal. I just bought some roof-bars for solar panels & spare wheel and I'm worried about being top heavy. However I would not mind the lower ratio - good for up or down the hill.
Cheers,

Theo, love the truck, always wanted a high roof one. A few things I would change though.
Door cards look pretty ordinary, lower ratio diffs would give higher fuel consumption, front diff lock not operational
very strange for Rudi, maybe Rudi exchanged for a non locker ?? Solid shaft, not my cup of tea, but others love it.
Would be interesting to find out the seating cap, once you take it out of QLD.
Just some observations....Hart

Have to agree Theo, lower ratio is the way to go with taller tyres. My experience is that fuel economy does not suffer. I would like to know how those 31 inch tyres fit on the front without rubbing issues. Eddie.
