Nick, Roger, et al,
The Australian delivered Syncros came with 5.43 diffs. The original
brochures put out by Ateco (then the Australian distributor) stated
4.86, but this was incorrect.
What Roger says is correct - the front and rear diff ratios MUST be
the same. The VC will tolerate only a few percent difference in
rotational speeds between the front and rear axles. Running two
different ratios would rip the guts out of the VC.
This said, buying a front diff out of any Australian delivered
Syncro would be safe in respect of the ratio being correct. In any
event, the ratio is easy to check when the diff is out of the
vehicle just by rotating the input shaft and counting the output
revolutions.
And a few words about the front lock. For just about all off-road
driving except the very extreme, the rear lock and VC will get you
just about anywhere. A front lock will give you a few more percent
of capability but at the expense of making the vehicle next to
unsteerable when the front lock is engaged.
There are other means of getting more front traction (solid drive
plus decoupler) but do consider whether the end result will justify
the work and expense.

careful to ensure ratio compatibility otherwise your VC becomes very
unhappy with you. Your email seems to show awareness of this but
whilst I can't be more helpful just wanted to make sure you weren't
about to destroy your VC.
