jumping out of 4th gear

Hi Syncro t3 group

I have a 1992 t3 syncro that i have had for 19 years. And i am wondering if some one can give some advice on why it is jumping out of 4th gear ?

The gear box was totally rebuilt about 10 years ago . and wondering if it is a costly repair ?

Thanks gerard.

Hi Gerry,

Jumping out of gear usually means the 4th gear and idler have worn flanks. 4th gear gets a lot of use and is a common failure point in a syncro .

Its re-build time unfortunately. Maybe talk to the bank manger.

Also Rudi is injured and unwell so my re-builder recommendation is gone also unfortunately.

19 years is an excellent run without major gearbox issues though - count yourself lucky!

Cheers,

Scott

Mine is also a ‘92, with 223,000km on the clock, and it’s had a previous gearbox rebuild, albeit quite a while back (have to check bill for date/kms)

It’s now wanting to pop out of 4th, but also likes to pop out of 1st when sitting at the lights.
As the gearshifting is a little harder than should be, I’m leaning towards worn shift linkages etc, so am going to look at fixing that first, which is a lot easier and cheaper.
Will report on how it goes!

There is a mechanic in Wollongong area who rebuilds the gear boxes he did a friends of mine and he is happy with the job, look on google for vw repairs  ,I had mine done by Rudi which cost $7300-00 which included changing the gear ratios on 2/3/4 gears, also in the Bundanoon area  there is another who also sells parts cannot think of his phone number.

Wow $7,300 - I assume that included removal and refitting?

And what ratio changes did you go for on 2/3/4? Higher or lower? Was it for better drive off-road, or for lower revs on road? Assuming you are still on original wasserbox, or is this a Subaru?
No it did not as the box had to be sent to Bribie island and i am in Sydney, i went to a higher gear ratio to lower the engine revs on the highway, the mechanic who Removed  said that i have nailed it regarding the ratios, have not tried it off road yet, his cost to R&R the box, replace clutch and pressure plate and 2 universals was $2300-00 he also rebuilt the clutch fork, Rudis labour cost was app $1200-00 plus parts ,the pinion gear had lost teeth which also affected the crown wheel, mine had the same problem changing gears 1st and 3rd

$1200.00 labour would seem quite reasonable, the cost goes up sharply if you need gears. If only bearings and seals are required the cost would be much less, thus it is a good idea to get it done early before more damage is done,
