leaking head

Hi all,

I have recently noticed water leaking from the left hand side of my engine, just where the tin ware bolts onto the motor. I have had a conversation with Paul Muller (Muller & Muller Sydney) regarding this and he suspects that the head gasket is to blame.... One solution he suggested is to put a radiator stop leak into the system hoping that that this will get me out of trouble for the meantime...

I guess if that doesn't work i will be looking for a good VW (Syncro) mechanic hopefully on the western side of Melbourne as i am located in Ballarat. At this stage i am finding it difficult finding anyone with the knowledge to fix it.. I spoke with the local VW/Audi service center today regarding my issue and he replied "Whats a Syncro?"

Any help, suggestions, comments welcomed....

Cheers Tony

Tony,

If it has to be replaced, Volkwerke in Greensborough is the best place to take it.  Lloyd Davies has more experience with the MV engine than most and has a top reputation.  There are a couple of places on the west side but you would need to be well attached to the Mafia to even think of going there!

Tony,
For what its worth, prior to heading off from east to west recently, Graham Adams syncro had a leaky head and was advised to try a not inexpensive you beaut stop leak treatment ... which he then agreed to have done.
Only to discover soon after the treatment that the leak dramatically worsened. So the only recourse was to pull the motor for a head job.
Sounds to me like a trip to a Melbourne based water boxer engine rebuilder. Good luck.
Cheers.

Hmm, ok thanks for your advice. I think I'll try the additive for now but it looks like a trip to Greensborough... Should I do any other sort of maintenance while the donk is in bits?? She has 154000ks on her

Tony,
Don't know your syncro service history nor its present condition, but preventative maintenance is done much more easily while the motor is out than in.
Aside from the head job, a heavy duty clutch kit, then think about all those tricky R, R or R jobs that are hard to do in situ, rule them in or out, such as ...
Starter motor and bush.
Water pump/oil cooler/mini coolant hoses & associated seals.
Oil pump and/or seals.
High and low oil pressure switches and seals.
Exhaust system components could be a can of worms.
Think about where all other engine case orifices seals are located.
I could go on. Life's a bitch! HA!
Cheers.
