Les - tributes

Hi All,

Assisting Hartmut with preparation, it's proposed a document comprising a compilation of all member tributes to Les will be presented at the funeral service to Rita and family of Les.

If anyone has anything further to add to their tribute already posted, or those who wish also to be included, I invite you to post additional thoughts and experiences you had with Les and send either to here or else directly to me at unclekenz@hotmail.com.

Presently for several member tributes, I do not have the surnames of the authors, if you could please pass them on to me for inclusion:

Jim

Gerald & Robyn

Richard

Finally, if anyone who has a photo of Les, time now is of the essence, please post it asap here and to expedite preparation, please email it to me at my email address above. I will include a photo of Les in the document.

Thank you.

Ken Garratt

Great idea, Ken, will give his loved ones a better idea of what he did for our group of varied , sometimes strange and slightly eccentric t3 Syncro enthusiasts. I first met Les about ten years ago at a Victorian DOTVW where I realised that I was not the only Syncro nut in the state. Since then he was instrumental in banding together the Melbournites and getting them together at the annual Vw show where he proudly boasted about our prime spot on the hill for all the Syncros. RIP Les, you set us up with this group, hopefully we can keep it going as you intended. Eddie Bergodaz.

Hi ALL,

HELP NEEDED PLEASE!

Still don't have a pic of Les for the "Member Posts & Tributes" document cover page.

Even if you have a group photo with Les included, then I can have a go at removing what's not relevant.

Any more tributes reminder, it is still open to all members to include or add further, but am getting closer to deadline, say Monday PM.

I still haven't received surnames for forum posts/tributes from:

Jim or

Richard

Urgent help on any of the above would be much appreciated.

Ken

Hi All,
Over the telephone I met Les, that was about 2002. I didn't want to be part of any organisation but rather wanted to do my own thing. I also didn't like the idea that I should have a computer at my disposal... Les however did not take no for an answer. He rang again to convince Elke to get me a device and asked her to teach me the basics.
Ever since we were in contact I am indebted to him for all the clear and spot on advice he has given me. He showed great interest in my aeroplane building project using a 2 ltr Beetle engine (Limbach to be correct). I finally met Les when visiting the DotVW, Mark had introduced me to Les, we got on like a house on fire talking much of the night away.
Since that time we stayed in contact covering many subjects other than Syncro.
His passing is a very great loss to me - his sharp, un-wavering mind I admired most. He was truly blessed.
How wonderful for him to have found a friend in Rita who cared for him these last years.

Hello Ken

Thank you for the effort to put this all together.

I am scouring my archives and I have so far found the attached photograph of Les in December 2006 in Melbourne, in his Syncro.

Also attached the only photo from that time of his Syncro, with special number plates.

I am confident I have a couple more photos, including one from only a couple of years ago in Uralla.

I will keep searching

Mark.

Very sad news. From the moment Alice and I met him Les was always so helpful and friendly. He always had time to chat with the kids and hear about our adventures, especially Syncro ones. His legacy in our little van community is a great one. His efforts have brought so many of us together, at shows, on camping trips and also created many close friendships. His level head, sharp wit and engineering knowledge will be sorely missed. Vale Les. Much Love. Alice, Greg, Sid, Audrey and Lindsay.
Ken, I have attached a photo from 2009 when we first met Les. It may be a bit small once cropped?

Hello Ken

Good news - I have unearthed more useable photos of Les, and some correspondence. I note Les' first car was a Beetle...'and the rot set in from there' was his comment in 2012.

I also found this from 2008

I actually lived in Sydney for 19 years before coming to Melbourne in 1972. Prior to that I was in Queensland. Born in Beaudesert, moved to Brisbane in the early 40's, joined Qantas out of high school as a cadet engineer in December 49.
I did actually set up a Google group for people who are VASS engineers, the people who do vehicle certifications for the Department of Transport but it never took off. Despite there being a clear need to communicate about the many problems encountered in this field, they didn't.
When I started this group (Aug 04), Yahoo was the only choice. It goes a bit clunky at times but it has served us well. I actually started a newsletter for Australian Syncro owners in December 03 and sent it to the few email addresses (about 20, from memory) that I had gleaned form various websites. This didn't generate much by way of responses so I set up the Yahoo site and it all took off from there.

Les wrote in 2010 of Beaudesert after I sent a picture to him of a Blitz Wagon rusting away in Birdsville:

The Blitz Wagon certainly brought back a shoal of memories. I grew up in Beaudesert, Queensland. Soon after the start of WW11, this little country town found itself in the middle of three very big army camps. There was Canungra, which was the Australian Army jungle training school, Camp Cable to the north of the town and Round Mountain to the south west, both very big US Army camps. About every second vehicle that moved through the town was a Chev Blitz or a Ford Blitz!

Les also wrote in September 2010

I have found a place outside my home town where I could get an inexpensive unit and be close to my only living relative, my brother, who is in Beaudesert.

All is quiet in Uralla, which is the way that I like it. We are attacking the back yard at the moment, in which everything has been growing at a furious rate.

For example, Rita assures me that this is a pumpkin but I am concerned that it might be a deadly New England Triffid!! The black bamboo has also gone mad and I am sure that it is working collusively with the Triffid to take over the back yard!

Hi group,
very sorry to hear about Les. I never met him but the forum was my salvation in van ownership! I would love to be able to put together a little film clip that we could have (possibly on the website and for his family) which I can make from any video or photos that anyone may have relating to Les and his legacy.
I make films for a living so can do a nice job. If anyone is interested, get in touch and we can work out how to get the media to me and a nice script.
Kindest regards
Nick Fletcher

Fantastic photos Mark.

Also a bit more about Les's very early days.

I had the same issue looking for photos when my Dad passed away - without him around to help it wasn't easy to find them and the time pressure is very high leading up to a funeral....

RIP Les.

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Ken, Hartmut,

With the Tribute that you’re working on, does it include flowers?  We be willing to help with cost, or do we bring our own.

Cheers, Theo

Hi Theo, in regard to flowers, we have not touched that subject. we think it to be best if attendees make their own arrangements.
Hope this helps… see you on Wednesday.

Hi Theo,

No flowers being planned. Actually I understood the trend these days is a preference for no flowers, rather, for individuals if they so choose to donate funds to a favorite charity. No doubt individuals are free to do otherwise.

What's being prepared is simply a document expressing the individual syncro forum members thoughts along with a selection of photos concerning Les and Rita. At an appropriate stage at the service, copies will be presented to Rita and Les' brother.

I expect that in due course, members will be able to secure a digital copy of the document together with all photos collected pertaining to Les and Rita. The complete record will be made available at the files section of the forum.

Finally, to add to that material of remembrance to Les and Rita, it would be appreciated if members attending could take the opportunity to secure photos of the funeral service and attendees etc. These can then be forwarded to me for inclusion in the file collection for posterity in memory of Les and Rita. Thank you.

Hi All,

On behalf of ALL members, may I take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge the inspirations and inputs of the following contributors to a Les Harris - "Posts and Tribute" document:

.

I first met Les at DOTVW in Melbourne in I think 2008.  His vibrant enthusiam was infectious and his stories around the campfire at night incredibly entertaining.
He was the reason we were there, I had never heard of DOTVW but he had heard of our trip to Cape York in our T2 kombi and had tracked me down somehow and insisted I join the forum and suggested that I attend DOTVW.
Due to his welcome and enthusiasm I decided to make the trip.  Les dubbed our van an "Honorary Syncro" and said we could park with the other Syncros.
When we arrived at the gate we were told we had to park with the other bay window buses but Les saw what was going on and came over and set them straight.  He guided us in where he had a parking spot for us next to his van and he had pre printed posters of images of our kombi from our Cape York Trip. He made me feel like a rock star that day!  It was a great trip for us and Les made it that way.
RIP Les and thank you for all the valuable technical assistance and advice over the years
but mostly for being a believer even though my van was not really a Syncro.
My condolences to Rita and Les' family,

Neil Smith, Karen Hughes, Hudson, Nelson and Amelia

Subject: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Les - tributes

Hi All,
Assisting Hartmut with preparation, it's proposed a document comprising a compilation of all member tributes to Les will be presented at the funeral service to Rita and family of Les.

Thank you.
Ken Garratt

I have never met Les but I know very well that I wouldn't own a Syncro with out this group and his guiding hand.  He took the time to call me once a few years ago to give me the heads up about a poor decision I was likely to make, which I appreciated. May you rest in peace Les.
Regards Greg Navarro WA
