LHD to RHD conversion.

Hi, I think I have said things about myself about a year ago when I joined in on the forum. I have read most threads and follow most tech talk eagerly. I don't say a lot or anything for that matter because my dad used to do all the work on my and our VWs until mow because I have left him in Namibia to stay in OZ.

I was going to import a Syncro t3 van to OZ. the van I used to have in mind was reconditioned from top to bottom by an old German VW mechanic. I didn't realize that it was registered on my dads name all the time and now I haven't owned the van for long enough to import.

My second Van is a real beauty and one of the original Steyer conversions back from 85 with the westfalia conversion e.t.c. It is left hand drive though. I have picket it up for 4000$ two years ago with 180k on the clock and register in Nam so I thought it was a good deal.

Now to come to the question, did anyone ever do one of these conversions? I have an unregistered van in NSW and could use all the steering parts to do do the steering conversion if that's so easy. Any advise on this would be great and maybe if there are other things to watch out for when importing.

Thanks again,
Jens

Jens,

There are considerable negatives in this.  It’s a hell of a big job, you will have problems sourcing parts, you will have to get it certified (very expensive) and you will finish up with a Syncro whose value is less than one that was original Australian delivery.

Have you considered importing your Dad along with the Syncros?  And I am only half joking about that.  It is amazing how many people from the southern half of Africa seem to finish up in Australia.  One of the most notable of these is our own Hartmut, who appears to be very happy with his life here.

Les

Les,   ask our kidz, they say our move to Oz has been the very best decision the family ever did (apart from driving Volkswagens of all kind incl Schwimmwagen, Kubelwagen, T1, T2, Syncro Trakka and DOKA Tristar).
We lived 25 yrs in Hamburg Germany. 15 yrs at Witwatersrand Safrica, and now 32 yrs in Oz. We like it so much that we, after 25 yrs on the island,  became naturalised loving it all the time.
