Loss of power (intermittent)

Hi all just thought I'd report on the 2.4 and how's it running.

For a long time I had a faulty airflow meter and I didn't know but I just put up with it (I get it got worse slowly....and I became accustomed to it).
Any way I was referred to a Vw guy who was good with electronics and it was him that picked up the worn out afm and replaced it and got my car running absolutely fabulous compared to how it was when I took it in.

(what he did tell me was that the car tended to run lean at idle so he recommended unplugging the exh sensor which must make it at idle run richer. This significantly improved the low down power of the car especially being a 2.4 ltr water boxer.

I drove it about 1000 km like that until I decided to reconnect the exh sensor. Yes it made it leaner at idle and as a result made it a tiny bit sluggish till about 1800 rpm.

I continued to drive it like that including a long hard trip to valla recently being 3200 km round trip.

And then in the last 2 weeks I noticed a funny hesitation at approximately 2800 rpm like a hickup or few together And finally it got to the extent (as in bad today) if I drive on the highway for a reasonable time at 100kmh and then back off for road works and then I try to accelerate again it feels like Ive significantly lost power (ie say 50%) like running out of petrol but here's the strange thing.....
If I turn off the ignition and then turn it back on .....the engine kicks back into life 100% power.

Today I travelling about 120km I had to do this about 5 times.

Any ideas.

My next step is to consider running a complete aftermarket efi system which will be expensive or considering a gowesty Delphi system.

Since building the 2.4 I've changed MAF, exh sensor, ecu temp sensor, hall sensor, plugs n leads, fuel filters.
I've also previously checked the throttle position switches and of coarse timing.

I'm a little bit tired and feeling that the efi system is just plain painfull.

Hamish, hi, gone through the same rigmarole like you , have even replaced the fuel pump, wanted to go to Narromine all packed up, hoping for the best. 60 kms into the 700 k trip I had to turn around and made it back home only by switching the ign off and on. It was running so rich the underside of the bumper was covered in thick black soot.
Back at base I checked the only thing which had escaped any attention. In my case it was the micro switch hiding under the throttle body. It's bit hard to measure with a multimeter , I made myself a connection from a disused push plug to get a reliable connection to the multimeter.
And now it showed that the micro sometimes worked as intended but most of time kept enrichment to full over the full range.
I am now waiting for a replacement, used but working, which is in the mail. I will let you know how I am going in a few days.

Hamish that sounds like "Vanagon Syndrome".

Do you have the harness fix (which doesn't always fix it)?

Had the same problem.Got a vacuum operated micro switch from Gowesty and all is well
