Lower temp thermostat

Does anyone know where to buy a thermostat that opens at a lower temp than the stock 87degs? I have come across one by accident and run it in my LPG powered syncro but can't see anything on it to help me order another one. It has been suggested that it might be from a Mercedes of some sort. Any info would be helpful, thanks Eddie.
I could be mistaken but I seem to recall the Vanagon Diesel's had an 80 degree thermostat.

be careful about the Benz t-stat ..
the common one, say 80's era 300D , looks very similar but is not the same and won't work.

here in the US they always ask which one we want ..the 87 C or the ....80 I think.
those are both standard and common.

for fuel mileage it's almost always better to run the hotter one.

and a lower t-stat may allow the engine to run cooler ..initially that is.
but ...if the issue you are trying to address it keeping it from getting really hot in hot conditions , a cooler t-stat won't really help.  It may start out allowing the engine to run cooler ..
but once there is good load and the temp is above the t-stat's rating ..
a cooler one will not help the radiator cool the engine better.

If it's running at say 190 F on a big hill, it won't matter if the t-stat that's in there is a 170, or a 180, or a 160 ..once above 't-stat fully open' .......a cooler stat won't make the radiator cool the engine better.
And generally , warmer is better, though I can't really say if that applies to LPG.

I was under the impression that LPG runs cooler, doesn't it?

Thanks Ben & Scott ,the lower temp tstat in my syncro keeps it a little cooler in all conditions except for slow going ie- traffic or off road-that's when the fan kicks in and I assume keeps the coolant at around 87 .This is the only time the tstat can't make a difference .Cheers ,Eddie.

Hard to appreciate that right now. In the normally mild California climate, it 9.5C right now. I'm driving to a place where it is -5.0C at the moment. People with diesels are resorting to using cardboard to block their grill openings to increase their engine temps.

Ben,

By contrast, Melbourne is having a 400 day today.

And it was 46 deg in Ceduna yesterday!

Andy,

That’s a concern.  On the really bad Black Saturday in Victoria , Laverton weather station recorded 47.5 and Avalon Airport recorded 48.  What you got wasn’t far behind.

Best wishes for 2011.

Les
