mechanical problem/question

can anybody help?
the black very wide tube (air intake hose) which comes off the left hand side of the air filter keeps popping off........it has happened about 3 or 4 times now....we just screw it back on but occasionally it pops off again....it's quite dangerous as it has happened on main roads......
We put too much oil in our van a few weeks ago and read that this might be the cause:the oil increases the pressure in the hose. Anybody know what is the best thing to do.....shall we go through an oil change or just wait that the oil will burn away?
Cheers

Christina, The most likely cause of that hose popping off is that the gas system needs tuning. When the mixture gets too lean on lpg it will cause a violent backfire through the inlet. This can blow apart airboxes and damage airflow meters. If you fitted a new airfilter recently this would be enough to cause a lean mixture. Take the car to a gas place and have them adjust the "co" or mixture. They can also fit a pressure blow off valve in the air box.
How far past max did you overfill? The oil overfill and the induction tube are not related IMHO. Greg E

Two issues happening here, may or may not be related, either way need to be addressed.

If the rubber inlet manifold is dislodging, suspect the thread of the screw-up clamp is sufficiently damaged such that the clamp is no longer holding securely as it should. Try screwing it tighter and see if it releases/fails. If it looks/feels suspect, replace it with an exact diameter size/width equivalent. Also, be sure the rubber manifold is fully seated in place and stays that way during the tightening of the screw up clamp, it's easy to not notice it partly displacing while you[re screwing up the clamp.

Overfilling the engine oil is not a good idea:
With an oil collector pan placed below the drain plug, drain and collect all the oil and then refill using same oil to the correct level OR:
Unscrew the drain plug till it just releases, hold the plug closely in place to allow a small quantity of oil to drain and then screw the plug back in. Not that difficult, bit messy but serves to remind you not to overfill again. Recheck the oil level, adjust as necessary.
Cheers.

Hi Christina,
That air hose is vital to your engine's health as it is it's link to the air filter.
Our engines are exposed to a lot of dust and it should not get past the filter.
I cannot tell you what is going wrong, but suggest you source a new pipe and hose clips.
It could be just as simple as to how and where you are refastening to.

Perhaps someone else has experienced this and is better able to help.

Too much oil in the crank case.
Burning it off could destroy your catalytic converter, and that is an necessary expense.
Starting with a cold engine, there are two possibilities I would consider.
1. There are hand pumps you may be able to thread down the filler hole into the crank case, I have one I bought for a mower.
Alternatively: Using a plastic hose you might be able to siphon out what you need.
2. Get a very clean container, clean off the sump plug and the area around it and then drain the sump, putting back only what you need.
Be careful both ways to keep any dirt out of the engine.

Hope this helps,
Peter
