Mefro Rims

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is of value or relevant but I am using VW Tiguan alloy wheels on my Syncro 16 x 6.5 ET33. They are a great fit with 215/75/16 or 225/70/16.

There is a new set with tyres on ebay for $900.

A big thank you to all the participants on this thread.
Very informative. I wish that I had started this subject as Mercs Rims or perhaps as Alternative Rims
For anyone in the future to look it up, it's all here.
Les, can it be changed?
It certainly makes it much easier to look for 15" Mercs rims.
I will let you know how I go.
Cheers & thanks again,
Theo

Theo,

Create a folder in Files and put all of the relevant information into that folder.  When this subject comes up again, which it does on a regular basis, new enquirers can just be referred t the folder.

I would suggest that it just be called Wheels and it can then be used as a repository for comparative information on Mefro, Mercedes, original wheels, etc.

Ken,Phillippe,

I went shopping for rims and having the part # was a big help. Interestingly Ken's rims do have an ET 49, so I'll have to go with what Phillippe has #2034000002. But by gosh they do look flimsy by comparison to the Mefro ones. Greg Esposito put me onto this website
http://wiki.club8090.co.uk/index.php/Syncro_Alternative_Rims  with a warning not to overload the van.
I won't use them for touring, just for around town.

Theo,

It would be in your interest to first confirm the ET offset of any Merc or other wheel you may consider, prior to purchase.
The following procedure is Les's method for that purpose, previously posted here on a few occasions such as in this instance ....

Wheels and ET, by Les Harris

To measure the offset, take the wheel off the vehicle, lie it on a smooth flat surface with the inside uppermost.

1.       Put a straightedge over the top of the tyre then measure and note the overall width from the underside of the straightedge to the floor.

2.       Measure and note from the underside of the straightedge to the surface that mounts to the hub.

3.       Halve the overall width (1) and subtract that from the measurement to the mounting surface (2).

That result is the offset.

This would normally be done without the tyre mounted to the rim but you will get a sufficiently accurate measurement to give a close approximation of the actual offset.

I found this procedure most relevant in my case, given the ID stampings on my Merc rims are as follows:

124 400 0602    6Jx15H2    ET49    KPZ 616 5A    35/91

Using Les's above method, I first proved an ET30 on my original 14" syncro rims, following that I confirmed an ET31 on my Merc rims.

To explain the inconsistency of stamped ET49 v actual ET31, it was suggested the Merc wheel centres may have been repositioned on the rims. I do not know the history of the rims other than that they were first installed in 1992 and have remained in service ever sinc e.

Cheers.

So when I go to the wrecker I will have a better understanding as what to look for. I want to find out the approx. cost for a second set of wheels. With my set of Mefro's I can't get into the garage. Hi Peter when you put Tiguan Rims on do you use the tyers that come standard with the Tiguan or do you have to upgrade to Light Truck tyres because of the extra weight. Regards Greg

Greg,

Load rating is what governs tyres, as Phill points out.  The Syncro is a heavy vehicle and therefore subject to heavy tyre loads.  My personal view is that it is false economy to use lower rated tyres and this applies to city driving as well.  There is the added factor that insurance companies are entitled to refuse to pay out if the vehicle is fitted with tyres of a lower rating than the ADR requirements specify.

I originally ran the Yokohama Dynapro HP 215/65/16 that came with the wheels which are fine for road and sand. I then put Continental 4x4 Contact 205/R16C on ( as seen in the photo's from DOTVW) but they just rubbed on the small plastic mud guard on the front and they felt weird on the road, not a great tyre. I now have a set of Yokohama Geolander AT-s 215/70/16. they went on yesterday so too early to give a definitive review but they feel good. No clearance issues at all. I'm off to Fraser Island for 6 days on thursday so I'll report back on their performance there.

Dynapro HP load 98 = 750kg
Geolanter AT-s Load 100 = 800kg
Conti. Contact 4x4 load 110 = 1060kg

None are listed as LT and LT is not listed on my tyre sticker that came with the vehicle.

Please note that you'll need to get the centres bored out to 67mm to a depth of about 10mm to fit the rears on - but do them all of course. This costs between $25 & $50 per wheel.

There is a set for sale on ebay the link is below. Additionally if you need a 5th (spare wheel) I have some extras as I purchased 2 sets to get my spares.

Cheers

Peter,

Please take lots of photos and maybe the odd U-tube video of your Fraser Island Adventures.

Sounds like a great trip - should be fairly busy too.

Cheers,

Cheers

Peter

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for 5 Metro rims. 6J 15 ET 35 to buy if anyone wants to part.

Mick Motors don't have them. Syncro Services aren't operating, and for me to bring them into the country freight wise is prohibitive.

I've got the original 14's and looking for a bit more clearance under the car.
