Mefro Rims

Hi peeps,

I think it was Francesca who organized a batch of 15" Mefro rims a while back. Just wondering if there's any sets left in the country ?
My mechanic Patrick has resurrected a Syncro with a H6 Subaru motor but can't get it over the pits due to incorrect ET of Merc rims.
Any help appreciated.

What is the ET of the Merc rims?

Couldn't you just borrow some standard Kombi rims?
They are the same from 1972 until 1992.

My Mercs are 31, close enough but merc alloys are way out. Maybe he could borrow a set for testing only , of course!  Hart

For the recent RWC for my T3  photos were taken of all the relevant parts approved which I understand is now standard practice in Victoria. Would you believe  that in this fair State some people were borrowing parts to obtain the RWC and then reverting to the original ones!

Roger I don't really think that people would do that. Surely not!

The Rover Trail @ Coffs, the Point Plommer Rd @ Crescent Head and Cape York are very good for "testing" purposes.

Hi Mark ,

Have a set of original 14 inch wheels which Patrick ( Is he at Mosman Park Motors) could borrow to get him over the pits.

He should have bigger brakes if he has fitted a h6. In which case the 14 inch rims won't fit. Greg E

Thanks for the input. Patrick has large brakes up front so needs the 15" wheels. Apparently the Merc rims aren't close enough to pass.
Also a damn fine syncro mechanic.

Hi Mark,

Before buying 15" rims make sure you have clearance to allow for a pepple or two to get through it. In my case it wasn't enough (AUDI A4 calipers ) and I had to take 16" (Mercs)

Hi Theo,
You should have looked at my 15" Merc rims when we met in Crowdy NP!!

Best? No idea, but do expect they are not as thick as syncro rims, just as mine are not. But they aren't damaged either after 20 years use on the syncro.

If my rims are representative of 15" Merc rims that fit, it's probable these rims are 25 years old or more by now. I understand my rims were fitted in 1992 and they would have been used rims at the time. Meaning they may be hard to find by now from a 20-25 year old Merc wreck or from a Merc wrecker.

Good luck. Cheers.

Ken

Ken,
Looking at them wouldn't help me much, I know what they look like but what I don't know is ET #,  part #, and perhaps which Merc model they came from.
So when I go to the wrecker I will have a better understanding as what to look for. I want to find out the approx. cost for a second set of wheels. With my set of Mefro's I can't get into the garage. With the second set I can choose lower profile tyres for around town.   (PS I have bought a larger brake kit)
Cheers,
Theo

Theo,

In another life (when I lived in Sydney) a mate had a similar problem.  It took us about six hours one Saturday afternoon to lift the garage roof by six inches and close the gap so created.  He was a very happy man!

That's the ultimate remedy, easier than digging 2 trenches!  Btw my Mercs
Are 16" and came new from Müllers. Swooped them for the 15" I had , Theo try Stephen kombi rescue he might still have them

Hi all
Have posted a few pics of the data stamped on my 15 inch Merc rims.
They are from a Merc C220

Theo,

It would be in your interest to first confirm the ET offset of any Merc or other wheel you may consider, prior to purchase.
The following procedure is Les's method for that purpose, previously posted here on a few occasions such as in this instance ....

Wheels and ET, by Les Harris

To measure the offset, take the wheel off the vehicle, lie it on a smooth flat surface with the inside uppermost.

1.       Put a straightedge over the top of the tyre then measure and note the overall width from the underside of the straightedge to the floor.

2.       Measure and note from the underside of the straightedge to the surface that mounts to the hub.

3.       Halve the overall width (1) and subtract that from the measurement to the mounting surface (2).

That result is the offset.

This would normally be done without the tyre mounted to the rim but you will get a sufficiently accurate measurement to give a close approximation of the actual offset.

I found this procedure most relevant in my case, given the ID stampings on my Merc rims are as follows:

124 400 0602    6Jx15H2    ET49    KPZ 616 5A    35/91

Using Les's above method, I first proved an ET30 on my original 14" syncro rims, following that I confirmed an ET31 on my Merc rims.

To explain the inconsistency of stamped ET49 v actual ET31, it was suggested the Merc wheel centres may have been repositioned on the rims. I do not know the history of the rims other than that they were first installed in 1992 and have remained in service ever since.

Cheers.

Ken
