I have a very large home workshop and would be happy to store the wheels while arrangements are made to pick them up.

My place is capable of taking very large non articulated delivery trucks and has a fork lift if needed.

I am also retired so at home most of the time, but will be overseas October 13 to November 4.

All four of us so far on the list have nominated Sydney, so my place is a possible destination.

I live in Castlereagh, a suburb between Penrith and Richmond.

Let me know if this can work out for everyone.

To all those interested in wheels, I have contacted Syncro Services (Dina) and they are getting back to me with a price. Apparently Dina no longer works work full time on this (has another job) so things could take a little longer to finalise.

Dina from Syncro Services has been in touch and has dimensions for the wheels to get a shipping quote. They hope to have this back to us later in the week.

I was also asked if anyone requires Mefro compatible wheel nuts as these can also be provided? I have added a column into the spreadsheet. For those who have added their names to the list, please can you indicate whether these are required or not.

Also when specifying wheel nuts requirements, I was asked if anyone is fitting the wheels to a 2wd/non-Syncro. If this is the case please make a note next to your name.

Thanks for this.

How different are the Mefro wheel nuts to the stock VW ones ?
Are they a different surface profile where the nut touches the wheel ?

I will be over seas for 24 days after next Saturday 12/10/2013 .
So hoping I will get my part of this in place before then as I may not be very contactable overseas.

Everyone fitting these will need wheel nuts. These have a ball seat for M12 nuts and the standard VW is M14. If you have a 2WD you will need bolts for the front.


We will also need centre caps.

So this means if we have a stock 14" Syncro,
Australia delivery,
we already have the M12 bolts on each wheel.
But if we are fitting new 15" Mafro wheels, we need new nuts with ball seat instead of the standard VW/Porsche seat.

What are these centre caps ?
And
Do we really need them ?

I have long since consigned to the curios box the hub caps and wheel trims that came with my Syncro.
Off road the 14" wheels were subject to so much distortion that they were always being collected by a friend following and given back at our next stop.
As a result my hub centres are always exposed and accessible.

I have a very large home workshop and would be happy to store the wheels while arrangements are made to pick them up.

My place is capable of taking very large non articulated delivery trucks and has a fork lift if needed.

I am also retired so at home most of the time, but will be overseas October 13 to November 4.

All four of us so far on the list have nominated Sydney, so my place is a possible destination.

I live in Castlereagh, a suburb between Penrith and Richmond.

Hi Francesca,

I have a quote from Syncro Services for the wheels including shipping and customs at their end. Do you have any recollection on what duties, taxes and other costs are applicable when they arrive into Australia? and how much these were last time?

If anyone else has any experience of importing into the country, any advice appreciated. The Customs website is fairly cryptic. Will have to give them a call I suspect.

Hi Jon,

I am afraid I didn't leave myself a nice, neat paper trail. I've trawled through some old strings of emails, and I think the customs charges came to approximately $978 on the 5 sets. I engaged a customs broker for $130 to clear them through customs as I was advised that it was quite tricky to do this yourself. I think the $978 was inclusive of GST? Sorry, it's so long ago now that I've become a bit hazy on it. If you like I could forward you some of these strings of emails so that you can get a idea of the various steps involved. There was a bit of to-ing and fro-ing once they were landed here to get them cleared through customs, but Syncro Services was always very prompt at supplying documentation when asked. Thanks for the info. I had a good chat to Customs today who filled in a few blanks. I got through to quite a helpful chap who was trying to determine whether we could avoid paying duty or not. Apparently there are some exemptions for classic cars over 30 years old if you can prove that the parts will only fit that specific car. Unsure if the wheels fit into that category so probably not a goer for us but good to know they are looking out for classic car owners.

Any emails you could dig out would be good. The clearing of Customs is the part I am unsure of. The chap at Customs only said that someone would need to present documentation at Customs house 2 days prior to the goods landing and that we could use an agent or do it ourselves.

The figure I have calculated for custom charges is quite a bit less than yours also for 5 sets so wondering if there is something missing.

Sounds like you're going into things thoroughly. You'll be on a winner if you can get around paying duty! I am pretty sure the figure I gave included GST, which you need to pay on imports over $1000.


From what I can understand/remember, apart from the documentation the difficult part with customs is getting access to officially identify your goods on arrival. I might have been tempted to take this part on, except that I had two young children and the goods arrived less than 2 weeks before Christmas and it was all going to be a learning curve I could live without. I was pretty pleased with myself just to make it through the warehouse and back to Collingwood with 25 rims in a big trailer and two boys on board. The customs agent cost around $100 divided by 5, which I figured was worth it to save my sanity, but I am sure you could probably handle it if you are keen though.


I'll see what useful information I can hand on from my correspondence with Syncro Services, customs etc. We have been very happy with our Firestones, which have been on for nearly three years and are wearing well (we don't do big ks though) and are pleasantly quiet on the highway.

Hi Francesca,

Think we might end up using a shipping agent for similar reasons. I am certainly going to be very time poor around the time the wheels will arrive. Just gathering some quotes for brokers/agents.

Had a quote for Firestone's at $171 a piece. The chap tyre shop said there we no other AT tyres in that size only light truck.
