Mounting LT Mirror

Greg E.

My large mirror from Glassic Parts finally arrived.

A question on mounting it - I know how Ken did it-very carefully predrilled for

self-tapping  screws. Is that how you did it or are there threaded inserts available?

Thanks

Theo

I know the GoWesty kit come with nutserts and have seen a fitting thread on the samba using nutserts. Have a look on eBay for them.

Theo you find them at any Screws / Fasteners bus. They might lend out the special pliers to fit them.

Hi Greg,
I have done a few LT mirrors now with the nutsert. There are several different types of nutsert that are available, make sure you use the ones with the larger rib on the sides so they don't spin on you. also I have Loctite and used number drill to ensure a press fit then crimped them in. If the nutsert spin on you they are a pain as the hole is well oversized for the bolt.
Cheers, Michael Roberts

Yes Michael I agree. I have used poor quality nutserts and had them spin. I generally use imperial drills or drills from my tap set to get a tight fit.
Ken, I don't see how machine screws are any better than taper screws. The metal is to thin to have the necessary amount of threads to hold its proper load.  Self tapers are at least designed for sheet metal. The correct method is to add bulk as VW did on the lower bolt of the electric mirrors. They fitted a nutsert.

Looked up ETK. This is the part number of the gen self taper used by VW in that spot.

And you can hang off mine with self taper screws. Only I think I am getting the good end of the bargain as I weigh 92kg.

B'hell now I have three choices doing it - Ken's way, get a Nutsert tool or use self tapers!!

Thanks for all the info.

You have done the right thing Theo. The Gowesty "tool" is just a bolt and nut. Much harder to do it that way and not as clean as the proper tool. You will be able to have crazy old men swing off your mirrors this way!

I have used many in the construction of experimental vehicles.  My mechanics made up their own tool for tightening the inserts and they never moved!!  The success of the system depends on proper installation of the insert.  It must be absolutely tight, which is why the lever tool is used.  With such a tool, it is impossible to get it any tighter and it will never rotate.

Correctly installed, you certainly can hang on it!!  The pop rivet type installation tools are OK so long as the tool itself is very big and very, very strong.  The lever type tool is still better than the pop rivet type tool.

They are relatively easy to make.

I share your concern. The way the tool works: put a bolt through the hole and screw it into the insert to

thighten the last bit ? Is this how it works?

Hi All,

My nutsert tool is quite sturdy but I needed to put an extension on.  I managed to install steel inserts, but made sure that they are absolutely tight with the screw & nut setup. As long as you use a star or serrated washer between the nut & the insert. Sorry I did not take a photo doing this -  too anxious at getting it right.

Now have to get used  to the vision.  I like the fact that you can flip them out of the way.

Cheers,

Theo

Hi Theo, looks very pro, better bring the tool along to Valla next year. Seeing that it will run for a full week , you could be busy....Hartmut

We have a new member, Andrea, who is touring Australia .  She is staying with me in Melbourne while we get a few things sorted on her Syncro.  While this is being done, she would like to find and fit a VAG seat swivel.  If anyone has one they are prepared to part with, she would be a very happy lady.

Les

Be aware that a non-seat swivel seat is thicker on the bottom than a sweat build to go on a swivel..as the swivel raises the seat about 2 inches.
if the person is small, they may like their increased eyeball altitude in the van.

if they are large......
take it into consideration. Some seats come out way high put on top of a swivel.
