My whole wheel hub came off!

Hey guys,

A bit of a rough one today. Looks like my wheel hub has decided to come loose and fly off into the bush whilst driving. Managed to stop okay but geez that scared the life out of me. Still can’t find the wheel.

Can anyone recommend someone who specialises in wheel hubs or drivetrain to get a new one sorted and to give the rest of the van a good check over? Only tell tale was a noise that I assumed was a fan belt squeal. Not the case.

I bought the 89 Caravelle with the supercharged EJ20 conversion. I’m based in QLD too.

Certainly woke me up that’s for sure! I’m in north QLD but don’t mind travelling.

You could try Leons Motors, Musgrave Rd in Coopers Plains.

They fixed my car some years ago, (we were holidaying at the time), very knowledgeable and helpful.

That would have been scary, I assume that can only happen if the split pin had an issue allowing the nut to come off. Perhaps that nut wasn’t torqued to spec which should be about 490nm, I know because it can be hard to get off when you want them off.

Should be a simple repair once you have the bits. Cheers Uwe

Yeah it was a wild ride! I have no idea honestly as I still haven’t located my missing wheel and hub. Going to need a small search party to find it.

I’ve just ordered all the parts from Just Kampers. Is it a hard job getting the hubs back on? Any special tools?

My mechanic has a torque multiplier on his torque wrench to get it up to spec.

They are extremely tight nearly 500Nm!

If you have some steel scaffold sections lying around, they can get the nut up to spec.

Leverage is your friend…

How did you go with repairing the rear hub Rusty?

That is a scary situation to happen, and scary there was no warning signs.

I’d certainly be checking for damage to the splines and thread of the axle before reassembling.
