Need some Information.....

I have been an avid reader of this group for a while now. I do not own
a Syncro but do have a much loved 84 Caravelle GL (poor cousin of the
Syncro).
I am soon facing a reasonable repair bill for some engine work , so
maybe it's time to think about a Subaru conversion.
Does anyone know a drive-in drive-out conversion specialist in the
Melbourne area or anyone who has done the conversion that would be
willing to do another for me (with appropriate payment of course). I
could assist but I am no super-mechanic.
The other alternative is to find a more reasonable repairer for my
current engine problems (needs new exhaust, rusted coolant pipes,
service, tune up).

Several members have already done their own Subaru conversions, the most recent being Andy in Ceduna, South Australia, who fitted a 2.5.
 
The only place that I know of who does this commercially is Custom Off Road in Stafford, a suburb of Brisbane.  Phone 07 3356 4356.  There might be others which our list members know about.
 
In respect of a rebuild of your existing engine, speak to Dean at Volkspower and see what he can suggest.

Dear David,
If you are over this side of Melbourne,I've been happy with the servicing of my syncro at Volks Repair 11 Earl St Airport West.9330 3455. They are VW and Subaru specialist and have a lot of knowledge/experience/enthusiasm with VWs. They tend to favour keeping a vehicle as the manufacturer designed it -which might suit as your email seems to suggest its more a problem with ancillary items -exhaust, coolant pipes than the basic engine.  On the 2.1litre it cost me best part of $1000 for new pipes but they showed me how mch more difficult the extra strengthening of the sycro made fitinng them. (I decided against using the "go westy" replacement kit from USA which would have been a  cheaper solution.) Its easier to justify spending on a 92 model particularly as I get a long way from civilisation at times. (Driving over to Perth and back later this year and expect to go whale watching in the Bite and a few other diversions).
Give them a ring and see what you think.(The mechanics not the whales)
