New file uploaded to Syncro_T3_Australia

I have no clue - mine was previously Owned by Graham Lees of Beetle Wreckers fame so he could have plucked them from any number of T3's that came through his yard.

I heard Ateco brought most in with this square headlight option though.

My 88 had the square lights, the spare in the usual place, but I got the dodgy 5 digit speedo with no clock.

Never worried me as I have a digital clock in the dash anyway and the speedo make it look like a near new vehicle

It must have been one of the 3 syncros imported into Oz during 87.

Dear All,
All my T3s had square headlights except my '82 air cooled 2 litre.
I have an 89 and a 90 2WD and an 89 Syncro, all with square HLs.

The 1.8 litre water cooled had round headlights.
They disappeared with the advent of the 2.1 litre water cooled.

The headlights and matching black plastic grills are interchangeable between '82 and '93.
Hope this helps,
Peter

In Australia Ateco and TKM usually optioned square headlights. The early 2.1 2wd and 4wd had round ones. These were an option as the round headlights were standard until '92. Your M code will tell you if it has square headlights.

Phill, did they include the square headlight option in the Australian m codes? The stickers are missing from my bus and books so I cant check mine. I looked through the mcodes and m984 is the h4 squares. M608 and S701 are the Australian packages, I thought the headights where included in these, just as the adr seat belt where? So those of you with late model buses say '90 onwards do you have m984 on the sticker? Greg E

Greg,

I have the same problem as you - mine have been removed (for aesthetics Mr Lees told me) and hence I have no clue about the M codes.

In my 99 golf they put the M code sticker in the boot and in the Owners Manual so you cant lose it.

Shame they hadn't thought of that with our models.

It is annoying isn't it Skot. No excuse for not sticking it in the service book though, that is just lazy or a lack of knowledge. The crazy German guy I bought mine from proudly announced that he had removed it. I wanted to clip him across the ear! Its been a while since I worked in a vw dealer and the computer system has changed since but you used to be able to print off the m codes. It is possible that they have dropped this info off the older models. The other option is to get a certificate from vw classic for some ridiculous amount of Euro. I haven't bothered because mine seems a pretty straight up deluxe window van. Greg E

My 1990 window van has original stickers under the dash and exactly the same sticker in the Service Schedule Book.
Despite mine having square headlights now, there appears to be no references at all either about a square headlight mcode nor an "Australian package".

All there is on both stickers is:
VIN number
Type: 254 DC5
Engine: MV
Gearbox: 6P
Paint Code/Interior equipment/Optional extras: L90D,  QR

Anyone know what QR identifies? Maybe hinged (opening) front door quarter lights?

Now if someone says maybe my van had square headlights installed after arrival in Australia, what's the likelihood a totally unrelated van ... Paul Nevins "ERIK", coincidently his vans square headlights were similarly replaced after arrival in Australia as well? Extremely unlikely, as well especially given "ERIK" and my van are only 2 VIN numbers apart. This to me suggests there's another explanation such as that by 1990, square headlights were no longer an "option", they had simply become the new stock standard fitment ... hence no need for ANY special code for square headlight nor reference to being part of an "Australian package".

Ken, Phill is 100% right. If you walked into a dealership in Germany in '91 you would have had to pay extra for square headlights. That said markets like Australia and the U.S. set out a minimum level of fitment for a few reasons. To meet local laws (adr etc). To cope with local conditions (big radiators etc). To reduce the number of options available so they don't have to stock too many cars. What I am trying to work out is if the importers ordered each of the late model cars with square lights or the factory was just on standing orders to deliver all Aussie t3's with H4's after a certain date (maybe in '88?). In Australia Ateco and TKM usually optioned square headlights. The early 2.1 2wd and 4wd had round ones. These were an option as the round headlights were standard until '92. Your M code will tell you if it has square headlights.

Dear All,
All my T3s had square headlights except my '82 air cooled 2 litre.

Hope this helps,
Peter

My 88 had the square lights, the spare in the usual place, but I got the dodgy 5 digit speedo with no clock.

Never worried me as I have a digital clock in the dash anyway and the speedo make it look like a near new vehicle

My '89 Trakka has the attached sticker under the dash. This includes the square headlight code.

I am struggling to find the description for a few of the option codes:

DH8 = ?

EKG = ?

FG0 = ?

478 = Spare wheel under front end (with 205R14C, gear ratio index 5)

608 = Australian equipment for cars with watercooled engine, RHD

657 = Power steering

912 = Steuerungscode für den Entfall des Typenschildes (Sonderfahrzeuge wie Kommunalfahrzeuge usw.) = Control code for the elimination of the nameplate (special vehicles such as utility vehicles, etc.)

984 = Square headlights H4/H3

992 = ?

Anyone got any reference of codes DH8, EKG, FG0, 992?

Also interested to see 912 (elimination of nameplate). What nameplate is referred to here and why would it be removed (because it was destined for Trakka perhaps?) ?

Cheers.

Jon.

Greg E

In my 99 golf they put the M code sticker in the boot and in the Owners Manual so you cant lose it. Shame they hadn't thought of that with our models. Skot On 1/07/2013 8:05 AM, greg esposito wrote:

In Australia Ateco and TKM usually optioned square headlights. The early 2.1 2wd and 4wd had round ones. These were an option as the round headlights were standard until '92. Your M code will tell you if it has square headlights.

Dear All,
All my T3s had square headlights except my '82 air cooled 2 litre.

Hope this helps,
Peter

My 88 had the square lights, the spare in the usual place, but I got the dodgy 5 digit speedo with no clock.

Never worried me as I have a digital clock in the dash anyway and the speedo make it look like a near new vehicle

No it's the black VIN and M code plate that they used to have to remove for ADRs. Later VWs (after about '91) had them left on. Maybe it was to avoid confusion with the compliance plate. Have a look at a private import as they still have them. Also you can see the two holes for the mounting.

My '89 Trakka has the attached sticker under the dash. This includes the square headlight code.

I am struggling to find the description for a few of the option codes:

DH8 = ?
EKG = ?
FG0 = ?
478 = Spare wheel under front end (with 205R14C, gear ratio index 5)
608 = Australian equipment for cars with watercooled engine, RHD
657 = Power steering
912 = Steuerungscode für den Entfall des Typenschildes (Sonderfahrzeuge wie Kommunalfahrzeuge usw.) = Control code for the elimination of the nameplate (special vehicles such as utility vehicles, etc.)
984 = Square headlights H4/H3
992 = ?

Anyone got any reference of codes DH8, EKG, FG0, 992?

Also interested to see 912 (elimination of nameplate). What nameplate is referred to here and why would it be removed (because it was destined for Trakka perhaps?) ?

Cheers.

Greg E

That's it. I think that the T4 and Golf 3 were the first to have them here.

No it's the black VIN and M code plate that they used to have to remove for ADRs. Later VWs (after about '91) had them left on. Maybe it was to avoid confusion with the compliance plate. Have a look at a private import as they still have them. Also you can see the two holes for the mounting.

Jon, The name plate is a number plate. That refers to not fitting a plastic surround for german/European number plates. Greg E

My '89 Trakka has the attached sticker under the dash. This includes the square headlight code.

I am struggling to find the description for a few of the option codes:

DH8 = ?
EKG = ?
FG0 = ?
478 = Spare wheel under front end (with 205R14C, gear ratio index 5)
608 = Australian equipment for cars with watercooled engine, RHD
657 = Power steering
912 = Steuerungscode für den Entfall des Typenschildes (Sonderfahrzeuge wie Kommunalfahrzeuge usw.) = Control code for the elimination of the nameplate (special vehicles such as utility vehicles, etc.)
984 = Square headlights H4/H3
992 = ?

Anyone got any reference of codes DH8, EKG, FG0, 992?

Also interested to see 912 (elimination of nameplate). What nameplate is referred to here and why would it be removed (because it was destined for Trakka perhaps?) ?

Cheers.

Despite mine having square headlights now, there appears to be no references at all either about a square headlight mcode nor an "Australian package".

VIN number
Type: 254 DC5
Engine: MV
Gearbox: 6P
Paint Code/Interior equipment/Optional extras: L90D, QR

Anyone know what QR identifies? Maybe hinged (opening) front door quarter lights?

Now if someone says maybe my van had square headlights installed after arrival in Australia, what's the likelihood a totally unrelated van ..

Greg E

In Australia Ateco and TKM usually optioned square headlights. The early 2.1 2wd and 4wd had round ones These were an option as the round headlights were standard until '92. Your M code will tell you if it has square headlights.

Dear All,
All my T3s had square headlights except my '82 air cooled 2 litre.

Hope this helps,
Peter

My 88 had the square lights, the spare in the usual place, but I got the dodgy 5 digit speedo with no clock.

Never worried me as I have a digital clock in the dash anyway and the speedo make it look like a near new vehicle
