Great report Peter, I was hanging onto my seat all the while reading it! Glad you and the Syncro made it.

A number of very good reminders too - tie the gear down inside and don't put the recovery gear underneath, as I have been guilty of that, to my regret.

Next time make a video of the trip!!

Wow that was a drama!

So how did it end?  You got through the the river limped into camp, water in the clutch, what happened next? How did it all pan out the next day?  No worse feeling than being in he middle of nowhere thinking shit how I'm I going to rescue my syncro from this mess!

Gripping report.

I remember going to Bendethera in my Syncro about 15 years ago. I came in from the west along the Bendethera Caves Fire Trail. It was pretty steep but no real trouble to get in and out.

Hi Rowan

It was Leonie that suggested the clutch was at fault. We decided to do nothing and just let it dry out overnight.
A wet clutch doesn't slip in a predictable way. It grabs, lets go suddenly and as a result the van lurches forward with sharp jolts.
It absolutely poured rain that night. We were glad to be on the 'right' side of the river.
In the morning I was certainly anxious to find out if it was the clutch. Thankfully the violent shuddering had gone.
To reach the main road (Araluan Road) we still had a minor climb out. It was steep, wet and very slippery but the Syncro performed. It was now almost routine.

In Moruya the first thing we did was report to the Police. They were happy we made it back, actually I think the 'boys' were a bit disappointed. They would have loved a rescue...
Then we sat down at the 'Red Rose' cafe. Coffee and the best egg & bacon rolls.

Any one keen??

She wants to thank everyone for their thoughtful wishes, and to those people who attended Les's service.

Rita would like to use the Syncro.......it does need a bit of work, to get it back to a reliable condition.

So, does anyone know of a suitable mechanic or auto electrician in the Armidale, NSW region?

These came from the Vintage VW SOS app that I have on my phone.

They are supposed to all be recommended repairers who know VW's - not so sure about syncros though.
