New member from Canada

Hi everyone!

I am a new member for almost a week now, and found out about your yahoo group through this fantastic web site:
http://www.syncro.com.au/

Wow! You guys have fantastic vans. Love the roo-bars and the slim elevating roofs. I will post some questions soon... Well, are those bumpers an option from Volkswagen? Are they aluminum?

My name is Pedro Dos Santos, 40 yrs old, and I live in the Montreal area, Quebec Canada. I am the proud owner of two vanagons, Transporters or T3 for you guys.

My T3 vehicles at the moment are:
- 1991 8 passenger vanagon converted to a complete westfalia, TDI ALH converted.
- 1989 syncro passenger with big tires, modified wheels wells, custom tow hooks on front chassis bumper. Soon to have custom rear bumper with D-Shackles. Suspension going up 2 inches... and some other stuff.

Here are some pictures of my syncro on another yahoo group (that I will send to this group later):
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Syncro/photos/album/26747170/pic/list

I'm already member of these yahoo websites:
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Syncro/
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/SyncroSafari/
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/SyncroDoubleCabs/

http://cf.groups.yahoo.com/group/Les-mononcs-en-folie/

I would love to travel to Australia someday, at the moment there is nothing set. But when I do, I would love to ship my westfalia, or rent, or buy one in Australia for exploration.

Thanks in advance!
Ciao!

Pedro,

The slim line pop-top was pioneered by a camping conversion company in Australia called Trakka.   Their T3/Syncro conversion came with aluminium front and rear bumpers.   Both the slim pop-top and the bumpers were later widely copied by others.

This is a pic of my original Trakka conversion:

Hi Les!

I've seen some trakka conversions before, but don't remember that slim pop-top, really nice! Is there a company that still sells those bumpers? I guess the shipping will be prohibitive just because of the size. The best would be a plan and get someone local welder build one for me.

Pedro,

Unfortunately, there is no-one still making those bumpers here for the T3, not even the copies of the original.   The rear bumper is fairly straightforward but the front needs to have the right proportions to look right.

There are a few Trakka conversions that have a white seal around the edge of the pop-top and the white merges into the colour of the top.   It then looks so much like the original turret that it can be overlooked.

Les

Welcome Pedro.

You are an excellent age and you have an excellent choice of vehicle.

Good idea to raise your syncro - the extra clearance means you can get over bigger obstacles and fit bigger wheels and tyres, then you can fit bigger brakes and end up with an excellent syncro and no money. Thats the joys of these vehicles - you can customise until you have no cash left at all or until the wife leaves you.

Enjoy your syncro - you have some excellent countryside to explore up there.

Cheers,

Skot

Regarding the front bumpers, I did notice some are angled forward so much, that it looks funny to me, and some others are closer to the headlihts. I prefer the later ones.

Yes the slim pop-top cane easily get overlooked. What I remember is the hi-top from Trakka, when there was those two racing australian syncros, the double cab and the hi-roof.

Pedro,

It might look funny to you but there is a very practical reason.   The more they slope forward, the more room there is for the bumper to progressively absorb any impact, be it from a kangaroo or a cow.   The closer it is to the body (more upright) the more it will flex under impact load and damage the front panel and lights.

The two Australian Safari Syncros are still here and both are in the hands of members.

Les

Hi Scott!

Yes I know, this passion is quite expensive...

For my 2wd Westfalia converted (done a couple years ago), I was in the middle of the TDI conversion, SA larger gas tank, bigger brakes uprade, 16 wheels, and then bought the syncro!

Well... I totally fell in love with the syncro and was so amazed by what it can do that I wished I had started with a syncro first. Sometimes I think I should scrap the syncro (there is a lot of rust anyway) and use all the 4x4 drivetrain and put it on the westfalia, and sometimes I think I should sell both, and buy a Syncro westfalia TDI...

The wife is still there, but the savigns are one :-(((

Just wondering, what time is it there right now? It's 2:20 AM here.

Pedro

I changed the subject line for future references, as I did look into past post but no results.

I appreciate your help in my quest with those cool australian alloy bumpers, Bob!

I did some search on the net with the name, the phone number, and on the Sydney yellow pages but did not find anything. I was looking for a web page with pictures to see if they have what I'm looking for. Do you have that available, or are they a small company with no web page? Or even take some pictures and put them in the yahoo photo page?

thanks in advance!

Pedro

Thanks for the correction!

Does your front bumper looks exactly like Les ride? Does it lean more forward, the same, or less?
