New Member in Sydney Starting the Syncro Search

Hi there, just got around to writing my first post after registering ages ago. Moving house and organising (and paying for) a wedding delayed looking for a bus by quite a few months, but I'm stating now! New Year resolution and all that.

I've not had a VW before, but my parents had a T2 high top camper when I was a little 'un in the UK in the 70's, so it's in the genes. I had a troopy kitted out for camping and did quite a bit of travelling with that, including 2 years through Africa. Sold the truck at the end of the trip in the UK. Been back in Aus a while and ready for something new now, hence the search for a syncro.

I've seen a one advertised that I might go have a look at over the weekend. Spoke with the owner today and he was up front about the vc being shot. It was affecting the drive so much that he removed some parts and has been running the bus as a 2wd since. He reckons $2k to fix it up back to 4wd.

I'm going to make some enquiries about this - I've heard Steve Muller mentioned as the go to guy in Sydney so will probably give him a call - but just wondered what you guys think about this. Would this bus be worth a look, or am I better off waiting for another to come up? I don't have the skills or facilities to this kind of work myself so would be paying someone else to do it. Also, could this problem have adversely affected anything else in the drive line?

Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions,

Paul.
Try and determine if it was a ex Telstra van. Distinguished by grab handles on rear tailgate and big crude galvanized rear step bumper.

If so then be prepared for more maintenance cost on gear boxes than 2 k.

Hi Paul and congratulations on your decision to join us. Your 2 year journey through Africa sounds like a story worth listening to round a camp fire some day.
Good points from Hamish. You don't mention the year of the vehicle you may look at. All things being equal the later the build of the vehicle (up to late 1992) the more likely it will have benefitted from ongoing factory improvements eg strengthen gearbox and better gearchange plus less wear and tear but that's why they are likely to cost more. Also what is your situation, budget, and how do you intend to use it e.g. how many seats and sleeping accommodation are your minimum needs. Do you want a pop up roof and camping fit out as the cost can be substantial if retrofitted although like houses most people want to customise them in their own way. ? Do you want to stay married - consult your new wife on what's non-negotiable for her even what are your plans family wise down the track. Will it be your sole vehicle - there is great expertise and experience within the group to enhance your mechanical skills  if its not your only transport and you have the time.
Welcome to the group.  Be patient, you may already be on to the right vehicle for you but if not something to suit your needs will come up and you will be rewarded with a vehicle that gives you access to the best places in Australia and much shared pleasure with your new wife.
If you get one in the next few weeks why not join us on our forthcoming Tasmanian Tour. Seriously stay with us, you have joined a great group of people located all over Australia.
Cheers
Roger

Hi guys,

thanks for your replies and the warm welcome. There's certainly some good campfire stories from the Africa trip. Some photos here if anyone fancies a look:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/nandihuntsthehoneybadger_part1

And somemore here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/nandihuntsthehoneybadger_part2

AFAIK the van isn't ex Telstra. The owner says he's the 2nd owner and bought it off the guy who bought it new. It's a 1991 model and done 300,000kms. The owner says it's got a good service history with Nymeyer Auto in Newcastle who seem to have a good rep. I'm waiting on the service history being sent through so I can see what has and hasn't been done. Definitely no engine work / rebuild though.

We plan to use the van as a camper for weekend getaways and longer holidays, not a daily driver. Living in the city we use public transport to get around most of the time. So we want a pop top and rear bed / seat. The van I'm thinking to look at has a pop top and full width rear bed / seat with 3 seat belts and no interior fit out to speak of. Ideally I'd want a 3/4 width bed / seat with 2 belts to give a bit more room for storage units. Interior fit out doesn't worry me too much as I've done a bit of that kind of work before building drawers for the back of the troopy.

Also planning to get into the mechanical work myself. I did all my own services on the troopy, just using a pro for bigger jobs. So whenever I do find a van I'll be picking people's brains for tech support!

In terms of budget, I've seen trakka vans advertised for $25-26k which is too much for me. This one is listed at $8,900 but obviously needs money spent to get it right. I feel like if it cost me around $10k to buy the van and get the vc sorted I'd be happy. Then take my time doing most of the interior work myself.

Anyway, not in a rush at the moment. Happy just to have a look around, chat with folks on here and be patient.

Cheers,

Paul.

Hi Paul,
There's a Syncro Discoverer camper on Gumtree in the Newcastle area at the moment.
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-vw+t3+transporter/k0r250

Looks interesting, quite good condition.

Me, I'm looking for a Trakka Syncro. There are a couple of 2WD's on carsales, one quite good.

Best of luck!

Bruce.

Properly still worth a look,if you are keen.
May only need to install a decoupler and fit the shaft and off you go.

Thanks for your replies and warm welcome.

I don't think it's an ex Telstra vehicle - the owner says he is the 2nd owner and he bought it from a friend of his who bought it new. He also says it has a long service history with Nymeyers in Newcastle where the van lives. They seem to have a good name so I plan to give them a call and get their opinion on the van. The owner has said he will send me a copy of the service history so I can see exactly what has / hasn't been done.

It's a 1991 van with a pop top but no interior fit out to speak of. Has a full width rear bed seat with 3 seat belts. Ideal for us would be a 3/4 width with 2 belts to give more space for storage units. Maybe a swap would be possible in the future?

The van has done 300,000kms. The owner says it hasn't had any engine work done, so I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on whether there's a ball park figure for engine rebuild time with the 2.1 litre. I also don't know how long since a timing belt change happened, so hope to find this out when I get the service history. Can anyone tell me the recommended service interval for this job?

We'll use the van as our main (only) vehicle, but that doesn't mean it would be a daily driver. Currently we don't have a vehicle and use public transport. We live in Sydney so this is fine for getting around, but as you can guess from spending 2 years in Africa we like camping and getting to remote places. So the idea with the syncro is mainly to have it as a weekend get away / longer holiday camper.

We've done quite a bit of camping with various set ups so know what we want - a pop top is non negotiable. In terms of interior fit out I'm able to do some of that work myself - I built a drawer system for the troopy. I also did all my own servicing on the troopy, just using the pros for bigger jobs, and plan on getting into this with the syncro too.

As far as budget goes, I've seen a couple of Trakka syncros advertised for $25 - 26k and these are out of my reach. The one I'm thinking to take a look at is advertised at $8,900, I guess to reflect the cost of getting it back to 4wd and lack of interior fir out. No diff locks either, but we made it through Africa without them so I'm not bothered about them so much.

Alright, this has turned into another super long post so I'm going to finish now.

Cheers,

Paul.

Welcome again Paul,

The van looks great and is the right colour!

These old buses don't have timing belts - they are old technology push rod type motors which means you will never have to worry about a timing belt change.

My van is almost the same as this as I have the same type of pop-top roof (yet mine is only 3yrs old) and I have the full width bed with a big fridge and one small cupboard.

I had a van which had cupboards along one side and the smaller double width bed and it was too squashy to sleep in on not nights (newly weds it would suit - but not those who like a good sleep). We have always had the full width bed in ours but I had cupboards throughout the central area which made life hell if it rained - just too small.

Hence, out went the swing away cupboard and cooker (I still have it if you want it - free) and in went a bigger 2-way mainly 12V fridge and a small side cupboard for various plates, air compressor, battery charger, fly screens, pots etc and we have heaps of storage under the seat.

We wash dishes outside in a flexible bowl, have a drive-away annexe for all our clothes, and other camping stuff etc and use plastic drawers/ plastic buckets for carting stuff around. This works for us with 2 kids - which may be whta you have to deal with in the future.

Just to throw a few more thoughts through your head.

Cheers,

Skot

Cheers,

Paul.

Hi Bruce,

that's the one I'm looking at. It didn't show up on your gumtree search that you linked to, but there's a trakka syncro in Melbourne on there too. About half way down the page:

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-caravan-campervan/vw/k0c18374

Looks good but out of my price range.

Good luck,

Paul.

Apologies for the double post! Sent this message first and it disappeared, checked back later and still not there so I posted another. Now they're both here and no edit button! Oh well...

Appreciate your thoughts on the interior, and it fits with my idea of taking my time, doing the work myself and figuring out the layout that works best for us. We might be newly married but we've been together quite a few years. First child on the way too, so a comfortable bed is more desirable than a narrow one.

I like the look of the Westy units I've seen in vans with the full width seat so would maybe look to do something similar with the fridge, stove, sink and cupboard space in one unit. Probably getting a bit ahead of myself thinking about the interior design though, need to find a good van first!

Cheers,

Paul.

Hi Paul,
One day we surely can talk Africa, having lived there for 15 years... Always had T2s and never a problem really, one learns quickly where not to go..

For starters, our engines (as long as you are not running a Subi) do without timing belts or chains. We bought our DOKA (double cab) in 91 and have

398 000 ks on it. It worked hard on a farm with one service p/a and the engine has not been touched til now. Compression is still good and equal on

all 4s and it uses +-750ml of oil per 1000km. The little difference here is that I do know the history of the car, but the one you are looking at had 2 owners

only !  Mine had to endure 2 Aus inland crossings and were driven by motor mag journos possibly belting it. On the second trip it had to carry 800 ltrs of

Diesel in Jerry Cans plus all spares and equipment on it's back, which was to be used for the 3 Jap 4x4s for an endurance test. The T3 Mule came out

on top especially for it's riding comfort.

Anyway, Paul, I think the T3 on offer could be a good start and you improve as you go.

Looks like that one has dissapeared.

It was way too cheap to last.

Looks interesting, quite good condition.

Me, I'm looking for a Trakka Syncro. There are a couple of 2WD's on carsales, one quite good.

Best of luck!

Bruce.

It went quick, the ad was only up for 3 days.

I'm sure another van will appear sometime, but seems like it'll be difficult to get a bargain. I've got the cash ready to go, but unless a van is in Sydney I can only really view at weekends due to my work.

If anyone sees or knows of a good van with a pop top roof for sale though I'd appreciate it if you could let me know about it.

Thanks for all your help and advice so far.

Paul.

Paul,

I think that guy was either really silly or he has been mis-advised about the value of these vans.

Pop-Top Camper vans are hard to get as they are usually only departed by Owners after death - like mine will be.

Expect to pay at least $15K and anything below that is a bargain or it has a massive and expensive problem.

Cheers,

Skot

Paul, Skot is right - pop-top Syncros under $15k would be hard to find anywhere in Oz.

There is a tidy Syncro Camper on Gumtree now - hard to find as the title is 'Synchro' rather than 'Syncro'

I am automatically wary of anyone who purports to own a Syncro – and spells it ‘synchro’!!

Maybe a case of if it seems too good to be true then it probably is.

Speaking with the guy on the phone he seemed to know what he was talking about, so I suspect there were more problems with the van than he was admitting to and it was priced accordingly.

He said that he would send me the full service history and contact details for the mechanic who knew the van but it never arrived...

Anyway, we're not in a rush.

As an aside, you mentioned that your pop top was new (ish) I think. Is anyone still doing these for T3's?

Cheers,

Paul

Thanks for the link, I've seen this one a while ago though. Think the ads been there nearly 3 weeks.

$26k is too much for me anyway, but what do you guys think about the price? Is this market value for a good pop top camper van? I know market value is whatever someone is prepared to pay, but does anyone know what they've sold for recently?

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,

My pop-top roof was done by Discoverer Campers originally about 4 years ago now. Discoverer bought their T3 roof design from John Terry Campers who purchased it from Camperize in Brookvale, Sydney where it all started many moons ago.

The roof was actually made by a company called "Nose Cone" who make all the fibreglass wind deflectors for large trucks.

They (Discoverer Campers) stuffed up the reinforcing to the elevating section and about a month later they went broke.

After about 6 months I got a cheque from the Office of Fair Trading for nearly $4K to get it fixed although it ended up costing me about $4.5K to finally fix it. The saga didn't end there - after the new overly reinforced roof was made, I had it painted to match the rest but it wouldnt close as they put reinforcing in the wrong places.

After they (Nose Cone) came and picked it up, cut out the dodgy reinfocing and layed in new properly located reinforcing the roof was delivered back and fitted by Macron Campers in Ourimbah and it has been fantastic ever since.

Nose Cone still had the mould about 2 years ago when someone else enquired about it but now I wouldn't be so sure - not a huge demand and space for storage is precious.

Anyway there is a possibility that they can still be made and fitted yet it is remote.

Cheers,

Skot

Maybe a case of if it seems too good to be true then it probably is.

Speaking with the guy on the phone he seemed to know what he was talking about, so I suspect there were more problems with the van than he was admitting to and it was priced accordingly.

He said that he would send me the full service history and contact details for the mechanic who knew the van but it never arrived...

Anyway, we're not in a rush.

As an aside, you mentioned that your pop top was new (ish) I think. Is anyone still doing these for T3's?

Cheers,

Paul
