Hi to all

It is hoped that in time we will be able to contribute to the group.

Being new to T3 Syncro’s I have heaps of questions. Being new to the group I will try to contain my enthusiasm. Our T3 does not have diff locks. I have contacted numerous sources such as people like Bernd Jaeger enquiring about the availability of such = NO. I understand the housings have provision for diff locks. Fitting is possible with a little machining. Are diff locks either new or second hand still available and if so where ??

Most people just get new s/h gearboxes from os.

Col,

Welcome to Syncro_T3_Australia.

You might have an ex-Telecom Syncro.  Telecom bought a flock of them for remote area servicing but, being a government instrumentality, had brain fade and didn’t get diff locks.  Most Australian delivered Syncros came with a rear diff lock as standard.

The lock and non-lock boxes are identical apart from the machining required to accommodate the fork that accomplishes the lock / unlock function.  Whilst it is possible to machine a non-lock box, it would be a helluva job, even if you could source all the parts.

Before you commit yourself to any course of action, take the time to try the capabilities of the Syncro without the locks.  You will find that you can get into some truly amazing places just as it is!

If you eventually decide to look for a locker box, the change-over is simple.  If you are looking to source one from overseas, bear in mind that it has to have the 5.43 crownwheel and pinion ratio.

Les

Hi Col ,

You could talk to Rudi on Bribie Island (contact details in the Workshops Directory database). He has fitted syncro difflocks, even to older baywindow kombi boxes. My recollection is that some non-difflock syncros had appropriate cases (machining still required) and some didn’t (still maybe possible, but build up welding and machining required). Rudi would be able to tell you how to distinguish. I agree with Les though, the syncro is still very capable, even without the difflock. I would think the expense is only worthwhile if you had to open the box for some other reason.

PS. Where are you located?

Col,

Brian had an ex-Telecom Syncro for a long time, so he can tell you a lot about their capabilities.

Brian,

Col is in Queensland (Maleny) and not far from Rudi.

Thank you Ken,

patience and luck I guess is the key:) just like with any other solid classic vw..enough experience there.. what I would like to ask is if looking for syncro camper what to look for? ie rust areas, expensive mechanical repairs etc, just general tips would be great, I understand there is not many to pick from but would like to understand anyway so any feedback is appreciated. cheers
