New part for my Syncro

Hi,

I have just picked up a few goodies for my Syncro on my travels in the USA .  I have a Locking LSD for the rear and moving my locker to the front.  Also picked up a new de-coupler and rebuilt VC.  Now I can't wait to get home install them and go have a play and see how it all works out. Very interested in the LSD rear ends performance in slippery condition especially in the muddy clay up my way along the Murray river .

Hey michael, sounds like you have some nice upgrades for your syncro. Have thought to get a decoupler too. Seems they're all sold on exchange unless you want to pay double. Do you know how heavy the nosecone is and the decoupler for that matter?Let us know how it goes with lsd and decoupler once everything's installed!

Cheers alf, Have seen those south african kits. If I trusted myself enough to put a decoupler together I'd do it. Don't think I'd trust anyone to machine the nosecone casing for me either so I'd probably be better off buying an assembled unit on exchange.

Hi Erik,
I will weigh the decoupler when I get back to Canada, I have left it up there for the moment, as I'm traviling back down through the USA.  And I will definatly post how the rest of the install goes.
Cheers

Hi all,

In case anyone's interested, I've ordered a reasonably priced Syncro Services decoupler from Germany. I sent the 2.9 kg exchange nose cone via sea mail for AU$40. Hope to have the decoupler back in a couple of weeks and install thereafter.

Hiya,

i think the nose cone can be bought for 90 EUR directly from VAG in
Germany... i doubt that it makes sens to send any nose cones over the
ocean :)

Thanks for that, but $40 is a lot less than 90 Euro, and in this case the nose cone was a spare that my mechanic happened to have.

$40 isn't too much and atleast you don't have to send off the nose cone until you've received the decoupler. Did you order a solid shaft along with the decoupler? Hear they make a huge difference in performance for sand driving

Eric, before you decide on a solid shaft, please do your syncro a favour and talk to somebody with an understanding of the inner workings of our vehicles. I’m only standing outside of any greater technical knowledge other than , that you have to be 100% sure to disengage your decoupler when you enter the bitumen or run the risk of damage to your gearbox. I personally left my viscous in place as it was almost seized . Just a thought anyway, but I would talk to Ben,Les,Phil L.  Rudi  or others before removing it.

Hi Martin,  what the seller refers to when he wants the nosecone returned, is a complete part with all the inner workings assembled.

Hi,

I didn't order a solid shaft because we have limited opportunities of driving through sand in Victoria. I imagine it would be very handy in WA, NT and Queensland, though.

I'm finally back in Canada and I weighted my decoupler..  It's about 5 kg all boxed up.  A VC weights in at 8 kg and a locking LSD at 12 kg.

Cheers for the info Michael the decoupler isn't too heavy. Wouldn't be too ridiculous cost wise to send by air-mail. Bet you can't wait to get all these bits installed. Let us know how it goes.
