New Syncronaut says Hello

Hi,

I bought a T3 Syncro with one rear diff lock, original MV 2.1L 95 HP engine and a 'camperize' camper conversion last week.

I used to own a Syncro back in Germany, which I missed sooo much that I had to get one in Australia too. The one in Germany is with my Dad now. It is a 16" two diff lock camper with a 70 hp Turbo Diesel engine. We had to fit a new gear box a few years back, but otherwise it's been fine ever since.

I live in Carlton in Melbourne for almost 3 years now, and I will be here for at least another year. Then I might have to leave the country (Business Visa expires when the jobs expires). My partner and I decided to do so in style, by taking the Syncro around Australia and the ship it home to Europe from Perth. We gonna take it with us to Europe, Sorry :-).

I have a question to the community already:

Does anyone know a reliable and knowledgeable VW mechanic that would be proud and happy to give my new Syncro the 'all over'. I even think ti have a engine rebuilt done. I am getting married in a few month and my folks want to give us the 'Syncro-rejuvination-treatment' as a wedding gift.

I was told that Volkscare in Boronia are very good, but I just thought I get a few more opinions, and where to better get them then here?

Great to be here!

Cheers,

Sebastian

Hello "new" Syncronaut Sebastian,
I've been very happy with the servicing and repair of my Syncro at VolksRepair 11 Earl St. Airport West. Phone 9330 3455 and speak to Rob or Russell and mention my name if you like.I've found them knowledgeable, experienced and decent but they won't accept payment in Euros at the moment.
Like yourself I live in (North) Carlton and find it quite handy to drop off my syncro and then ride back to Carlton down the Moonee Ponds bike path.
As we are practically neighbours we should catch up over coffee soon when its mutually convenient. My phone number is 0422 024 197. Possibly others around here will also seek to join us.
Reading your plans to take your Syncro back to Europe I should warn that Australia has legislation that protects items from export if they are listed as of significant National Cultural Heritage ! Shipping us your twin diff. lock 16" might however help your case.
Hope you enjoy your time with us. Australia's a great country to explore in a Syncro.
Cheers
Roger

Morning Roger,

Sebastian might not have counted in the horrendous import duty he will be hit with, seeing the Euroland finds itself in at present ...AND to top it ‘Deutschland ueber Alles’ will hit him with a 19% Mehrwertsteuer (GST). Hope all this nonsense will stop him from depleting our Syncro arsenal by one unit. We can’t afford this and let this happen. Why not offer him a decent job here and have his 16”over her ?

Hope for the Best Hartmut

Hello New syncro nut,

Just trying to find out what colour your new syncro is? also what you paid for your Syncro? As I am looking to buy a Syncro Camper and trying to get an idea of the market price.

Thanks,

Leighton

Hi all,

thanks for the warm welcome! I will post a few pictures soon. We are currently renewing the backseat covers and I want to wait with pictures until then.

It passed VicRoads registration today and is now fully back on the road. :-) It also got a name now. The nunberplate decided. Its Yvo!

@Leighton: It's blue-grey metallic and I paid to much! :-) I dont really want to tell, sorry! But you should expect 15k upwards for a well preserved Syncro I guess, but I am new to the Australian Syncro market, so maybe I am wrong. In Europe the most Syncros are between 7k - 14k depending on outfit etc...And in America teh prices are insane. I saw a few which were more then 40k!!!

Cheers,

Sebastian

Sebastian,

In all fairness, the highend of the Syncro market in the US are Westfalia campers and Doublecabs (Dokas). Most "tip top" uncamperized Syncros range from $5K-$10K.

Lloyd and I are both on the DOTVW (Victoria) committee; in a recent conversation, he told me that his two sons do the later model work and he does the T2 and T4 work, so his customers get the benefit of his lifetime VW experience.
