New Winch

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the advice. I agree the extra weight is a concern but so is getting stuck out on the bush. I was looking at the warn xd9000 as well with the remote control to make it easier to power out if needed.  If you could send me some photos of your set up it would be really good.  I already have lockers front and rear, but I go out drive a lot on my own so the extra security is what I’m after.  The rest of the Syncro has been built as light as possible also have upgrades spring and shocker so I’m hoping all will be good .  The idea of mounting it in the spare tyre well is to keep the weight as low as possible and as close to the front wheel to minimise the weight over hang.  Any other suggestion would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Hi Theo, Michael, all,
Yes Micheal I have a winch on my syncro. It was there when I bought it. It is a good quality install, the bracket attaches to the chassis rails as well as the bumper reinforcement and does not effect the approach angle. If it had not been fitted already I would not have gone this way though. The winch (warn xd9000) weighs 40+kg, the bracket 30+kg. Extra weight no syncro can afford. A good winch (beware of cheap ones) will cost $1500-2500. I guess a fabricator would charge $600-1000 for a bracket like mine. If I had a syncro with rear diff lock and I wanted more off road insurance I would get a front diff lock and pocket the change. If you do go the winch way I could take some photos. The idea of fitting in the spare wheel area I don't like. Firstly how do you operate the freewheel lever when stuck in a bog hole? Also it would be too low and engulfed by water every river crossing. It looks neat but is not practical in my opinion. Greg E

Hi All,

Below is the link to a very interesting U tube video on the syncro from
the bay up through to the T5 All Motion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=qqKbrtlIO7o

The narrator keeps saying that the T3 is still the best off-road
performing vehicle over the last 20 years.

Enjoy. Hopefully it works....

Cheers,

Looks great Greg.

Probably really only works as you have done away with the original bumper bar.

Looks quite strong and very well built.

Give us a report on how it goes in service.

Cheers,

Skot

Great find Scott really good overview with historic perpective.
Caused me to find the following U Tube entry. My brother has been all over Australia in his HiLuxe including the Canning Track and E-W and W-E crossings without once using his winch. However he reckons it was more than worth it for the extra assurance it brought to his travels. In this T3 Utube link it  seems to suggest if you can't get a message from having been bogged twice on the same bit of track and found even a quad bike couldn't get through then don't leave home without a winch. I'd also suggest there is a lesson to be learned  from this link on keeping people awayfrom the potentially dangerous arc around the winch when operating it.
Also is it me or is that a very very short wheelbase T3 ute?

PS will be reviewing all the Tassie responses Sunday night.

I definitely agree with two things you mentioned there Roger:

1) A winch is definitely required when you stupid enough to keep going in the same bog hole your mates keep getting stuck in.

2) That ute is an extremely short wheel base and quite well butchered.

Skot

Greg, Thanks for the photos. You certainly have good access to the freewheel level up there above the bumper. My plan is if possible to mount and extension to the leaver that can be access from within the Syncro. A bit like the old bug fuel taps. Won’t really know until I get a change to sit the winch in place and have a play around.

Great idea. Maybe a thick bowden cable like the ones they use on gearshifts so you can seal the hole in the floor. You don't want wet shoes every river crossing. Greg E
