New Winch

Anyone running a winch on the front of there Syncro?  Looking at the possibility of mounting one in the spare wheel well. If anyone has photos of your set up it would be apreciated.

Cheers, and have a Merry Chrismas

Cheers and Happy New Year, Mate not sure what you would fix to under there and there could be issues with tangles on the wind up and the wheel holder does act as a great skid plate so my thoughts would be to mount onto the beam behind the bumper as the origional winch was fitted to.

There is a kit available to fit there but not sure where i saw it.
Basicly just tubes to stop crushing and maintain integrety when bolts are tightened and load applied?
What size winch did you have in mind as they are getting cheaper now days and the Syncro is not light so even more so when stuck in mud etc?
Best Regards Pete

I think I'll put my 8k-lbs on 2" square receiver which I'll install these receivers both front and rear. This give me an option to put my winch to appropriate way of pulling.

Winch is bad news, taken mine off before it would have ripped off the roobar AND taken the front of the DC with it. Won’t put it back.  Hartmut

If I correct, Herman bolt his winch on "super strong roll bar" that he made himself.

Phil, If you save the picture from his Vanagon album you can zoom in. It appears to me that he has tied the bar to the van rails mostly? with some other fixings and there may be a bolt also behind the guide bracket? I dont have Picasa but he does answer questions about his work? Happy New Year Pete

Look Guys, good luck if we want to copy Herman. He is a one in a million. He works on his pet project for many many years. He designs, builds possibly rejects it, re- designs etc he loves what he doing

He spends so much time building things, we just can’t copy him , my personal view. Putting the winch into the spare well , good idea because it can be mounted solidly, but my winch needs access for the forward/reverse/neutral switch, so that position is out for me. Mounting it on to the bulbar with long bolts ,bushes and through the front end of the truck didn’t give me the strength required to keep it in place. The bolts have to cope with shear and bending moments. Hello Les, is that a good combination?? Also the big , fat relays takes up most of the space under the passenger seat and the big cables need holes and electrical protection, the list goes on.. Hartmut

Pete,

No, I don’t know Herman personally, but have followed him for a few years. I am sure BenT could give us a bit more info on his back ground and maybe his aspirations . Will he ever finish his project ?

Nobody knows, not even Herman. I myself am nursing such a project, building a bi plane , it has had one flight.... Will it ever be finished ? Don’t know but have great hopes.. Hartmut

Hartmut,

I only know Herman from his blog and some email communication with him when I asked if he is willing do do some work from someone else. He always says maybe one of these days.

Like many of us, his projects are never ending. I am certainly the king of perpetual projects in my area. The difference between me and him is he actually gets his projects to the point of enjoying them. I'm beginning to turn into a parts collector like my late friend Andrew Grebneff from NZ. In the end, his widow had a pile of new unused parts to unload. I have a 40' container of the same.;-) A couple of seconds ago, UPS just delivered a 76 lb. box full of a 4.86 locking front differential.

I'm thinking of swapping out the 6.17's in my Syncro 16 for faster highway cruising. The AAZ just needs longer legs than the old JX engine I took out. This diff popped on the market at a very reasonable price a couple of days before Christmas. I decided to give myself a combined Bday and Christmas present.

Hi BenT , so you had a wonderful Christmas pressie ! A front diff, woh! Myself, I got 2 sets of wind deflectors, can’t wait for them to arrive. Your friend from NZ might turn in his grave if he knew that his wife is selling all his treasures for a price he said he paid for them....??

So there we have you as a Sagittarius ? Would explain a few things, am connected to one for the last 54 years....Hartmut

Hi Theo, Michael, all,
Yes Micheal I have a winch on my syncro. It was there when I bought it. It is a good quality install, the bracket attaches to the chassis rails as well as the bumper reinforcement and does not effect the approach angle. If it had not been fitted already I would not have gone this way though. The winch (warn xd9000) weighs 40+kg, the bracket 30+kg. Extra weight no syncro can afford. A good winch (beware of cheap ones) will cost $1500-2500. I guess a fabricator would charge $600-1000 for a bracket like mine. If I had a syncro with rear diff lock and I wanted more off road insurance I would get a front diff lock and pocket the change. If you do go the winch way I could take some photos. The idea of fitting in the spare wheel area I don't like. Firstly how do you operate the freewheel lever when stuck in a bog hole? Also it would be too low and engulfed by water every river crossing. It looks neat but is not practical in my opinion. Greg E

Hartis,

Your Sagitarius and I are of the same vintage except I am a Capricorn.

I'm Andrew's wife had some idea he was spending his entire paycheck away. Sadly, I am one of his enablers. I recall sending sets of MB alloys with tyres in one of the larger shipments. His SVX conversion and Hansen Porsche brakes were much more damaging to his wallet though.

I do miss the little bugger.

Hartmut
