Not so brilliant if you don't know what it was all about. Take the converter out and check it by looking into it. It happened once to me and even NRMA was lost for advice, the engine started but died after a few seconds. I rang stephen Müller and he advised to undo the converter and trash the internals with a bar of some sort. The NRMA garage people looked on and when I had the converter back in, I started the car and went home. A few years on I found a converter again and all is fine. Hart

Good work Ken and a great article on Van Issues and Tips on troubleshooting.
PS think I am driving around in a fortune worth of spare parts?
Cheers Pete
Ken,
Thanks for refreshing my memory.
By the way, as far as I know, VW Classic parts don't deliver outside Europe - what a shame.
Cheers, Theo

Hi Tom and ALL,
Combined with use of a Bentley Workshop Manual, the following link covers some DIY maintenance items including catalytic converter you mention, worth a read and even to copy/paste/save to a file for future reference.
If not already done so, why not read Van Cafe's whole news article, a range of topics and especially if interested in availability of parts that once were obsolete but since returned to stock officially or else through third parties.
The part enquiry that comes up here every so often concerns one or more of the four mini mud flaps. See parts numbered 9 and 10 here on the following schematic:
I thought they were NLA for some time now yet three of the four are still listed at VW Classic Parts in Germany, albeit very expensive. At the following link, click on "Access without prior registration" then simply do a search by entering "mud flap" at "Description" and it should list three of the four flaps as being available.
So if this info is to be believed, then the left front 251 821 809A is the one definitely NLA new.
Even more expensive and to have a syncro nutter belly laugh and if you're desperate for a replacement right front one, then check the price (plus shipping) on this "gold plated gem" here.....
Or else take a punt on this pot pouri of god knows which ones are actually on offer and who knows whether they are serviceable at all ... I have my doubts, let the buyer beware ...
With all this now revealed, perhaps the second-hand resale value of these mud flaps have now skyrocketed, especially the left front NLA one.
Finally, an optional accessory for those like me carrying a 15" spare wheel underneath, I'm curious as to what others may think of this item or may already have one fitted and can comment on its real life benefit or otherwise.
Hope all this is of some interest.
Cheers.
Ken

I limped to the " Deutscher Auto Engineer" in Lylidale Victoria.

My way home was a slow trip till I got to about 300 m from home driving slowly up a hill when suddenly I heard a kind of a metallic click from the engine compartment and was 'thrown back' into the seat.
Full 'power' was restored.
