Ken and All
Just been to fill up, truck ready to go, on exit from highway brake booster
collapsed. Leaves me with VERY little to slow down. I knew for a few days that braking had become harder hence me asking around re bmw E30. However
been thinking it might be good enough but common sense prevailed.
At my vintage these decisions hit hard as I been looking forward to the camp out in the midst of like minded friends Subi or not doesn't really matter.

It is my intention to explore the Flinders in September. Will be in company of
Friend Rolf Gerig who installed Golf Tdi 2 litre (!) successfully, also we mlght be in company of Dietrich who is a very professinal VW cum Porsche specialist
Any interest please get in touch.

Thats a shame Hart.

Was looking forward to the big red fire truck being there.

There is no chance any of us could win peoples choice as we aren't driving split windscreen kombis but thanks for the flowers.

I would suggest the BMW booster anyway - always go up not sideways!

See you soon.

Cheers,
Skot

Hi Hartmut,

I'm totally devastated. Very sorry to hear this has happened to you at the 11th hour. Guess it could have been worse though ... say stuck in Sydney.

Funny you say "Just been to fill up". Which is exactly what I have just done this arvo as well and exiting the petrol station, the van unusually started playing up .... not wanting to idle, cutting out but still if I kept the revs up, it would move. Thinking another variation of Vanagon syndrome, drove it around for a bit and seems to have cleared itself and drove home without any more problem. Weird and worrisome hiccup all the same, touch wood it's OK tomorrow for the trip south.

Must catch up soon.

Cheers and best of luck with the replacement booster install.

Ken

Very sad news. I know the FIL is not happy at the moment. I will still be coming down to represent the Mid North Coast. Syncro all polished. Peter

Trying to help with the sad news about the Tristar’s brake booster with memories about when it went to the 30 year anniversary in Berlin along with Paul’s van. Photo of Hart and I looking at the 2016 calendar they produced. I am taking it down to the Nationals for Paul.  Peter from Port

Awesome.

Looking forward to seeing this.

Cheers,

Thanks Mark, every bit of info helps. We had your doka on our farm for a week it had still all the internal safety stuff installed as well as 8 shokkies. It was a real monster. Would love to see it one day. Been to WA when we did the Canning stuck route in a popemobil (MB). That was Some 30 yrs. ago.....

Hi Hart, sorry to hear of your troubles. The boosters for all E30 fit and while they differ in part number and manufacturer are all the same according to etk. I have fitted two and cross referenced the part number of both (one from early318i and one late 325ci) on etk. Etk said both fit all models. If you can find one a late coupe or convertible will be the youngest available as they made these after E36 production started. You need to drill and tap the 8mm clevis from your vw booster to fit the 10mm threaded rod on the BMW booster. You may also need to file out some holes as it is quite tight on some cars. Since you are removing the pedal box think about your the possibility of needing,
1. Your clutch pedal welded and a new pin.
2. Master cyl brake
3. Master cyl clutch
4. thru bolt

    Best of luck. Gregor

Good evening Gregor, thank you so much for your detailed run down of proceedings. Now, first, to find a late E30 will be hard if you are time pressed, so what i do is to get any e30 i can get. We ordered one today $105 icl post and i will install it. Prior i think i can test it using the gowesty radiator check airpump to check if the airpressure remains constand. Next i will have to try and reinstall, that will turn out to be interesting i guess.
The larger pin is perfect, still had grease in the cavity  between the two gun metal bearings, the elongated hole in the clutch leaver i will weld up and re drill
to 8 mm or might open it up to 11mm and fitting a bronze bush reaming it to size.
A bit of a mistery is the push pin which is bend, but maybe i get one with the unit i am getting?
Clutch and brake cyl were replaced by me before the Europe trip. Should be ok

Taking the thing out was quite an ordeal, took me 4 hrs, the various vids didn't help too much either. Putting it all back will turn out to be the real test, wish me persistence and most of all a good dose of luck. Will keep you informed.

Hartmut
