Hi All,

What's going on?  No queries, call for help, or advice - for over a week.

So I will have a bitch on having spent quite a bit of money recently on the Syncro,

and ending up with oil & water leak. The pleasure of owning a Syncro.

Cheers,

Theo

Theo,

Thats nasty.

I thought you got a real low km version?

I bought mine specifically because it had the head-gaskets done.

I had the new stainless exhaust wrapped before it got dirty to prevent it heating up the new gaskets and cooking them which apparently makes them leak.

Most syncro to suby swap 2.5's have an exhaust that sits a lot closer to the engine and hence causes heat damage more rapidly than in a Subaru car. A friend made heat shields and fitted them between the exhaust and the engine to help prevent this issue.

Cheers,

Skot

Hi Theo, sad to hear on the leaks, hopefully they will fix it for you? Or at least be a simple fix.

If your stuck, I think Pete from Custom VW has experience with Subaru's also. (I have never used him, but know of him)

As far as the pleasure of owning a Syncro, mine is thankfully still going well, but have noticed a few changes recently in terms of being a little lethargic off idle, and different smell from the exhaust. So something is happening with the EFI system. Have been meaning to look into it for a while, but life gets in the way. Initial thoughts are the Temp sensor as all earth's were cleaned (and doubled up) when the engine was out last year, as were all the connectors in the whole system cleaned etc. I have not just replaced it as I want to take some measurements first to compare.

The changes are very subtle and hardly noticeable, has not affected economy, but I know something is changing!

On a side note, has anyone ever tried to fit a second radiator fan in front of the radiator? As we come into the hot weather and the AC is on more regular, the fan is on permanent with the AC. I was wondering if it's worth having a second fan, the extra only runs with the AC, the original is only there is the temperature rises too much.  Just a curiosity.

Anyway, hope your Melb visit is going well.

Richard

Hi everyone

I’m new to this group. Proud owner of a T3 Syncro 1989
After spending a small fortune on the gearbox recently it’s going so smooth I’m constantly looking for excuses to drive the scenic route of course.

Sorry to hear some of you are experiencing troubles at the moment. That seems to be the joys of Syncro ownership.

If anyone can help me with or point me in the correct direction for a LH front swivel seat base I’ll appreciate it very much.

Recently I sourced a aluminium roof rack ladder from a old land cruiser which is going to be made fit on the RH side for access to my roof rack. Looking forward to that!

Thanks everyone

Cheers

Richard,

I have fit a 24x14 nostalgic air parallel flow in front. It's a bit of work but can be done and is alot more area than the original condensor.
If you ever want to chat about what it really takes to make one of these things cool inside let me know.

Hey mate.

Good on your syncro.
I have a spare never used swivel base if interested, located Sunshine Coast QLD. Can ship but it’s pretty heavy.

Hi Skot,

Thanks for the suggestion and picture.  So, still more work to be done.

Thanks god that my problem is only superficial, oil filter & stainless steel pipe, but still annoying.

I don't want to crawl under the van any more.

I think the swivel bases are interchangeable.

Mine was definitely not sided and it is a factory VW/ Westfalia version.

Well worth the install and the added 25mm height increase to the seat too.

I think the swivel bases are interchangeable.

Mine was definitely not sided and it is a factory VW/ Westfalia version.

Well worth the install and the added 25mm height increase to the seat too.

Cheers,

Skot

Cheers

Richard

Hi All,

What's going on?  No queries, call for help, or advice - for over a week.

So I will have a bitch on having spent quite a bit of money recently on the Syncro,

and ending up with oil & water leak. The pleasure of owning a Syncro.

Sounds like a discussion for when your up this way :)

Welcome aboard Jacques, if you have the gear box done, at least one of the biggest jobs is taken care of!

Do you have any more details on what yours is? (camper, van etc?)

They are a labour of love to keep on the road, that is for sure.

Gday Pete,

you have one of those bases for sale ?

Might be a nice addition .. Van's going very well although heater fan died last year. That'll be a fun job.

Thanks Richard
Its a humble transporter which I found by accident in Melbourne
I grew up in a VW house hold my dad was a car sales man new and old for VW and manager most of his life. So I leant to drive in a beetle and a T3 ute

Much fun, I remember a situation family driving through a heavy rain storm in a rural area in that occasion a 411 variant my dad was clam as ever, the Road became a river he just said not to worry the car can float and so it did wheels getting traction very now and then Lucky we where close to our destination but man was I impressed and also a bit worried.

Anyway Cornelia a nice fitting German name has given me so much fun already in only a year of ownership.
The great where sticky at first never let us down mountain ranges around canberra up and down until I realised it needs maintenance before something does really bad. So a few K later after importing crown and pinion shaft and a few bushes and bit - make it new while its open yes - its fun-tactic.

And then we realised it was standing in a spot and the repair shop allowing black mould to start appearing on material and seatbelts Now everything is out cabinets everything striped out. Cornelia got a vinegar wash down a good clean roof to under carriage.

So my 3 year plan has been brought forward to remodel and upgrade the interior using recycled wood and new insulation to our standards - as we all know keeping all mechanical things oiled greased and in a running order is a fairly constant job being up under in half man in the engine bay costly my finances are being split re calculated re visited often to - make it so!

Long answer to say its a T3 1989 transporter camper van 2.1l water-cooled engine going like silk, my freedom van!

Where about are you guys in this wonderful country of ours?

Hi Jacques,

I'm in Bowral (about 1hour 40mins towards Sydney). I may be in Canberra for a couple of days next month. Maybe we could meet up?
