Oil Seal flywheel side?

Hi everyone, have a question regarding the crankshaft oils seal fly wheel side. is it the same as a normal 2wd t3 or different for the syncro? looked it up on the online VAG cat&dog and the cost didn't  seem that exessive only around 14 uero's. went and saw a VW machenical workshop about one and he told me $160.00 because the syncro is different to the others. any one had any experience on this?

Cheers Phil

Hi,
I don't see any other comments yet so I will.

IF you are talking about the Rear Main Seal ..
the crankshaft oil seal that goes in a 2.1 waterboxer engine case at the flywheel end..........

that is not an expensive part.
Might cost the same as an oil filter or two.

it's the same Rear Main Oil Seal that's used in 2WD or syncro vanagons.

14 Euro's is about $ 19 USD.
that's on the high side for that oil seal, but not rediculous.

$ 160.00 doesn't make any sense. Is that with labor ?   $ 160 USD would be low in that case.

They have got the wrong end of the stick, or in this case the wrong end of the crankshaft. The pulley end has a different seal to stop water ingress on river crossings. If it is only the rear main leaking it is the same as 2wd and you will pay alot for labour to have the gearbox removed and a little for a seal. You can convert the pulley to the 2wd set up, I think all you need is a 2wd pulley and seal. Greg

Phil,
IIRC, there is no difference between the 2wd and Syncro REAR engine seal. Perhaps your parts man was thinking of the seal on the CRANK PULLEY side. That is different between 2wd and Syncro. The Syncro version cost about US$100 more here in the US.
One more thing thing to consider is the quality of the rear seal that you are seeking. There is a good article on the GoWesty site that talks about this.
Cheers,

More info Phil, the 248a is the extra collar that goes on the pulley and the 249a is the seal that is made of gold. You could try removing the seal and getting a match at your local bearing and seal supplier, just make sure it has the same amount of lips. Greg

Best of luck, Phil. I didn't realize Greg had already mentioned
the same thing when he said.
"...They have got the wrong end of the stick, ..."
Cheers,

The extra collar is a friction fit on to the pulley and it can be removed, it will then take the standard 2wd pulley seal. Have done this successfully before.
